I had one years ago, worst part is having the drinks that make you shit like fuck and starving for 48 hours.
The camera part was not exactly pleasant but probably more embarrassing than uncomfortable.
If the doctor thinks you need it then get it done mate

Yeah I've had a couple, nowt to worry about, uncomfortable but not painful. the worst bits were where they had to press on my stomach to move the camera around a bend.

Had the sigmoid colonoscopy about 2 years ago - the shortened version. Fascinating watching this light going up a red tunnel, and then reversing after a while! The only problem was the complete shit storm the day before. Not pleasant.
Also had the camera down my throat 3 times - like swallowing a snake.
No sedation for each "event".

I have had three and the procedure is fairly straight forward and with sedation you only experience minor discomfort. You can watch the progress of the camera on the video screen and they usually take a biopsy as a precaution.

The worse thing about the whole event is the stuff they give you to clear you out the day before, you spend hours on the throne as it really does the job and is not at all pleasant.

After you have had the colonoscopy you are bloody starving.

If you have sedation you don't know anything about it, just like having a tooth out under sedation. Only problem is it takes around 30 - 45 minutes before you're compos(t) mentis, and it's unsafe to drive. Being "macho" means you can drive after you've had your tea and biscuits.

I've had a few. As others have said, the procedure itself is uncomfortable rather than painful. They pump air in to you so that the bowel expands a little allowing them to see better.

As a side effect of this, I was sitting in the recovery area (I had sedation) when I let rip of the single biggest fart the world has ever heard. Local news reported an earth tremor of 3.5 on the Richter scale.
