HELP!!!!

my laptop has just started playing up, whenever i start downloading stuff it slows my computer right down and ultimatly crashes!

also, whenever im watching something on RealPlayer or Windows Media Player, it slows right down and stutters whenever i open a file/the internet, sometimes moving the mouse causes it to stutter.

Any ideas?

its on only 5 months old!!

loads of memory left and ive tried running noron anti virus, adaware and defragging it and the problem is still there!

If you have Vista and downloaded SP1 that may be a problem, I believe that it has caused more problems that it solved. If you have downloaded it in automatic updates then just uninstall it and see how it runs then.

Erm....slow Laptop, personally to cure this problem I would format the Hard Drive and start again with a fresh install of XP, its not difficult, but if you don't know how to do it or are unsure, I'm sure there's loads of Bluemooners near to you who would do it for you.

I work in IT I have found Norton a huge problem lately so if possible unistall it and install a different one, Kaspersky is very good. If uninstalling Norton go to their website 1st and download an uninstall tool as this will ensure it comes off cleanly.

Bit drastic to format the hard drive but if you have tried everything else this maybe the only solution. Make sure you copy any personal stuff onto CD or USB as formating will erase all data on the hard disk.

Agree with Killeen on getting rid of Norton. It hogs resources. Try one of these instead...

AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/

Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Also get a couple of spyware detect & removal programs (use both cos one may pick up something the other has missed)...

Adaware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Run this utility to get rid of any crap off your system...

Crap Cleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com/

All of the above are free downloads and should help with performance. If you run them all and nothing works, then you may have to re-image. Or, failing that, chuck it in the bin :-)

Given the description of when the symptoms occur that sounds like exactly what's happening.
