Do you think the lockdown is politically motivated in some ways?
I was reading some (albeit LW publications) claiming Murdoch is running the country changing his puppet leader as seen fit.
That's not a bad conspiracy theory.
the directions come from the Chief Health Officer an unelected bureaucrat whose every direction has been accepted by the State Government without question at least in the state of Victoria and that's where the issues and divisions start.
Some or the restrictions have been absurd and clearly without justification on health grounds alone such as banning kids from playing in playgrounds only to backflip sometime later when case numbers are actually higher.
the curfew has had no medical grounds for its implication , the health officer admitted it was done to give the police an easier passage to enforce the "health" order.
the state of emergency being declared allowing the health officer to have the orders made legal was never debated in parliament but the Federal Government has never challenged the locked downs in the court and allowed the states to make their own decisions in response to outbreaks.
the lockdown in Melbourne is basically because although the State Government that is responsible for the operation of public hospitals and has had many months to prepare for the increase in cases requiring hospital care hasn't ramped up the ICU wards needed to be supported by adequate numbers of health care workers ( doctors , nurses , paramedics etc on the frontline ) ( we have 117 currently in ICU and 520 odd in hospital and the health workers are struggling to cope partly due to the fact many have left the health system as we are reliant on trained overseas workers to assist once the levels get beyond this level and they have been strained after 20 months of double shifts in many cases).
Although the government crows about how wonderful our health system is covid combined with the fact lockdowns and extended ones at that have meant many delaying surgery and now the bottleneck has come to the fore so to speak and our world class hospital care cannot cope.
the idea is keep us in lockdown long enough to get the vaccs rates above 80 per cent double dosed and modelling says our hospitals should be able to cope despite the fact case numbers will rise.
As for Murdoch he runs some of the local papers and a television network but that's about it.
The media in the main have been pro lockdown largely from the left and supported the lockdown measures basically because they have been fully paid throughout the lockdown regarded as necessary workers and up until recently before the protests rarely seen in Melbourne unless some Union has its workers on strike for a pay and conditions of sort have turned a blind eye to the arrests , violence used by police on those " flouting the laws " and its got to the stage where often now unless its for effect the police themselves ignore those not wearing masks outside which have been compulsory for many months now and some of the other draconian measures in place.
its laughable really , you see often a horde of reporters asking questions each day when the premier gives his press conference ( often inside ) where those speaking don't wear a mask ( the premier recently got fined for not wearing a mask on 2 occasions no doubt has breached his own orders on many a occasion not caught on video ).
Police are now quitting because they don't believe in the orders anymore.
the health bureaucrats and the government that have not had their wages or working conditions impacted to any degree throughout the pandemic like the power and authority and like most won't give it up easily.
The public in the main have been complicate but if they don't return their freedoms and allow business and the economy and allow friends and relatives to visit their homes and begin to reopen normally soon their will be a lot more civil unrest especially if they backflip on their promise to allow small business those that have survived that is to reopen once we are 80 per cent double dosed fr those over 16 due around Nov 6 at current rates.
it really has been a basket case Mat , we have had by far the most number of deaths , the longest and most severe of lockdowns , the only city with sustained curfews and yet our numbers are the worst by some margin on any measure with a smaller population than the likes of Sydney with much few tests especially in this delta outbreak yet once again we will end up with the most number of cases and likely the most number of deaths in this wave once again.
Who knows when we will be allowed to travel interstate or overseas for a holiday or to see family that seems a long way off , we can't even go into the CBD from the suburbs not that there is anything to see or do anyway as everything is shut as we grow what hair we have left.
the ashes is in some doubt as they haggle over stadium and crowd numbers and the fact that WAGS etc will have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival no matter if they are vaxxed or not.
Would be better off to have it in England.
