Does anybody know how I go about converting AVI files to MP4 files?
I'm trying to watch films that I have on my laptop, on my tv by using a usb flashdrive. Thanks.

I tried that, and another one I forget the name of. My laptop just shut down as soon as I started to convert a file in both cases.

The spec of your pc must be poor for that to happen..

I just tried handbrake again, same thing happened.
I downloaded the other one that you posted but it doesn't seem to convert to mp4. Unless I'm doing something wrong again.

Loads of tools for it, i assume you do not want the methods i use but more a one click solution.

    I suggest <a class="postlink" href="http://www.xilisoft.com/xvid-converter.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.xilisoft.com/xvid-converter.html</a>

I have been involved in video encoding/ripping etc for about 14 years now and this is one of the simplest tools with good results for the average viewer.

If you need help finding it give us a shout, if you don't like it there are similar tools i can suggest.

Handbrake may require certain encoders to be manually installed.

Handbrake is the best option out there. I would suggest try the 32 bit version if the 64 bit isnt working for you.

    Alternatively, try <a class="postlink" href="http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/</a>
