Is there anyway to make the conversion on this go any faster??

Converting an mkv file to an mp4 says it's gonna take 25 hours, that can't right surely

files about 430 MBs, but still seems a long time that.

It will depend on your pc speck and the software your using

Why don't you just connect your laptop to your Tv via hdmi or vga...

I use adavanced tools which would probably be no good for the average user.
However encoding is my thing and you need "mediacoder"
It is free and imo the best gui based conversion app.

I assume the avi is a p2p groups movie rips so with that you really just need to rewrite the header and maybe audio.

Mp4 like avi is just a container for the video standards the file has.
The video is likely to be xvid which should play.
Before encoding to avc (x264) try renaming the file to. mp4 first.

What technique are using, crf or multipass encoding?
If crf no point in going lower than crf 20 preset slow.

What app you using and settings?
