COP26

as long as kids and Greta agitate and protest for change - as long as it boils the piss of politicians and middle aged men you know who is on the right side - I want kids of the future to have a future
In the words of the late great Micheal Jackson (also a fan of kids) "heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race"

It's their future at stake, and I can understand their frustration. As Greta said today, 26 years of Cop meetings, and nothing has changed.

I like Greta. She rumbles the old crusties, and it is time for the blah blah blah to stop and meaningful action takes place.

It's depressing reading the comments from old men writing in the Daily Fail comments section, but they don't have 60 years or so ahead of them, and if I was a teenager, I would be pissed off at the lack of action from those that dismiss her as some menopausal lunatic.

I sincerely hope she continues to rattle a few perches, because she represents the future. She has a huge following all over the world and they will soon be of an age to make the changes needed, and good luck to them.

They'll make dam sure it happens, and the old guard that couldn't really give a stuff will have to suck it up.

yes they will make sure what happens happens.

BTW - What do they actually want the climate to do and how do you propose they do it.

We could all do our bit to reduce our co2 emissions.

We could start by ridding ourselves of all the iphones we have produced and cease all future production what do you reckon?

Small but simple gesture and this would be a good start.

I had no realization that climate change was so well-recognized as a problem as far back as the 1980's:

The first time I saw the issue of man made climate change / global warming in the British mainstream media was a tv documentary circa 1986.

Greta can say what she wants but what does she specifically want to happen? I'm not talking about political strategies or people gluing themselves to tarmac moaning about government. I mean actual options that governments can take which will 100% sort the problem?

As it stands governments only have targets because they don't have solutions as the solutions are reliant on technology that currently does not exist. You cannot for example currently eat meat that does not contribute to Co2 so the only alternative anyone has today is to not eat meat. That is however a personal choice so what can the government do to shape this other than ban it or tax it to oblivion so people don't buy it?

Let's put it another way, I've just put the heating on because its nippy so I'm right now burning gas and contributing to emissions, what alternative does Greta propose? Do I have to accept it being nippy and turn the heating off or do I need to buy a £25,000 heat pump? There is an argument that the government should pay for these heat pumps but given the amount of homes (20m), that would cost something like £500bn. Are we all going to chip in for it then?

I'm sorry but climate change is a battle that not only will we not win but we've already lost. It was lost 100 years ago when we became addicted to the highest living standards that any living thing has enjoyed in history. Everyone quite rightly wants a piece of that and they will never ever give it up.

Nothing sums up the irony best than the fact that the Greta aware young generation will be the most emissive and pollutive generation than any before them.
She wants governments to listen to the science and go from there. Says it all the time. She also knows that politicians are not doing enough and has a voice to call them out. Says it all the time. She knows she won't have a voice forever so is doing what she can when she can. Says it all the time.

The Daily Mail comments section is flooded with Russian bots. Russia's economy is heavily reliant on fossil fuels so they have a financial interest in attempting to discredit the likes of Greta, as well as swaying public opinion on events like COP.

I'm fairly sure that's right. There is also massive support for anti-vax comments on there which can't even be reflective of the gammon population when we know that well over 90% of old people are vaccinated. It's all about shit stirring and it's the Russians that are biggest beneficiaries of this country being in disarray.
What is disgraceful is that the Mail allow it to happen, or more likely are fully complicit.

Mentioning older people and linking them to the gammon population is disgraceful.

Yeah, firstly Novovax was designed on information that was hacked by Russia. It's essentially the AstraZeneca vaccine. Russia needed a vaccine to improve its soft power around the world.

They know discrediting our vaccine can destabilise our economy and as a direct result, strengthen their own hand.

I'm an older person (in my 50s).
Not all old people are gammons by any stretch but most gammon are older people.
Didn't mean to imply otherwise and apologies if it came across that way.

Fair enough, I just hate that word referring to older people, kind of implies they are all intransigent, stick in the muds who have no regard for anyone else. I know loads of older people who are anything but, however I do know some that would fit the word but they’re definitely outnumbered, thanks for the reply.

Nice to see that there were more fossil fuel lobbyists, sorry, representatives, invited to COP26 than guests from any individual country. It's always the same when discussing regulation of any industry. Campaigners and non-profit groups are always sidelined or end up marching on the streets outside the events. Meanwhile the very organisations causing the problems, with a huge interest in ensuring that regulation doesn't happen, are guests of honour.
