The COVID-19 hotspots in the USA are chiefly (exclusively)? in rural Republican areas. And, unfortunately, Republican pundits on TV maintain their anti-virus rhetoric - and the rural Republicans lap that up. Honestly - there's no reaching them - unless there's a major change in Republican leaning political commentary - and that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.

According to broadcasts I've watched, 99.5% of COVID-19 deaths in the USA occur among individuals not vaccinated against COVID.

99.5%! WTF!?!? - This statistic alone, if believed, ought to convince the skeptical to vaccinate - but no, it does not. Because the skeptics disbelieve in the press, in science in medical experts, and so on.
 
So total cases (no Wales data from yesterday until tomorrow) = 2635.

Last week it was 3568

A very welcome fall. Two weeks ago the number for the two nations was 3134.

So today is down on both,

Total deaths for the two nations today 8 - it was 3 last week.

Less good news. But not unexpected given the lag.

England added 20 deaths last Saturday - though we will only be told on Monday. But the all settings number later will likely be at least that to add to the 8 which will give a clue to the hospital number we get Monday.
 
A total of 10,345 new cases in the Netherlands today, up from 6,955 yesterday, and from 1,128 last Saturday. Such a figure hasn’t been seen since before Christmas.

Government criticised for only reinstating measures that target the young, thereby stigmatisIng them, and for ignoring the advice of medics and scientists who wanted face mask use to be phased out gradually.

That is quite an increase - this variant is going to infect the planet it would seem.

If only you could just catch this once.. The pandemic would be quickly over.

Not sure this widfire spread is going to help or hinder by spawning even more variants.

We really need to be in a place where we do not have to think about going through the Greek alphabet every few months and adding weeks of study before we find out how bad the next one is for our progress.

IF only it would become something everyone can catch and brush off much like a cold. That would be the ideal solution. Though not sure it would stop mutations from happening and we are beyond the point where that is even an option,

Goodness knows where we will be with Covid in 5 years. Good or bad or more or less where we are now.

Just having accepted it is here to stay and we have to live with it

Oh for a time machine to go back to autumn 2019 and stop it spreading then. Once it got out of China it was already too late given its infectivity and our species now being a pan global one. This was going to happen sooner or later, It was well predicted. That fictional movie Contagion ten years ago was science fiction then and now looks like a documentary.

Some 47.7% of the population are considered to be fully protected, and some 79.5% have had one injection. It’s organised on a sliding scale by age, so people born in 2008 can make appointments as of today, and the authorities have decided to reduce the length of time between shots; currently, it is five weeks but quite how much shorter is not known.

five weeks isn't scientifically advised? No wonder they're struggling.
 
34 all settings deaths - 26 in England - was 18 with 15 from England last Saturday

32, 367 cases - 29 732 in England - was 24, 885 with 21, 317 from England last Saturday

Feel like it won't be long before adults in the UK are having covid parties, like chicken pox playdates for the kids. I think that's the strategy here anyway. Go on, get yourself out, don't worry about the hand gel just mix and have a good time....

Or is that what tomorrow is in reality? Employers probably prefer two weeks of absences followed by some immunity.

I think that laws/regulations should be passed to the effect as follows:

1) You absolutely do not need to receive any COVID-19 vaccine;
2) If you end up sick in hospital with COVID-19, after having refused vaccination, then you are solely responsible for the attendant hospital bills. Medicare/medicaid will not cover such expenses - moreover private insurance is forbidden to cover such cases either.

If you refuse vaccination - good on you. But if you subsequently contract COVID - you are on your own buddy. There's no fucking reason at all why society needs to step up and cover your idiotic decision to not vaccinate... I might however make an exception to a long standing/obvious religious objection to vaccination - though I'd want to eliminate this edge case as well.
