Interesting

It is clearly true and one reason I have been posting hospital data in detail every evening given how time consuming it is. It is now the key data really. Ins and outs. Patients day to day and week to week and ventilated bed numbers.

Because the ones still most likely to catch Covid are not now the ones most at risk as they were. As most of those are being protected. So case numbers in a sense are not really the issue. They will never be zero, Just low enough to be largely irrelevant if hospitals are kept from being overwhelmed and deaths are low.

Those are the real end games here. Not no cases.

the whole 'killer mutant variant' narrative was peddled to scare people and try and get them to comply with the government's decrees.

You're a conspiracist.

Seriously, there was, and is genuine concern in the scientific community over the variants that have emerged. As always with emerging new science there are differences of opinion within that community. And the variants have demonstrably caused problems already - the "Kent" one has overrun the country.

I see no evidence that this was somehow contrived as a communication strategy.

I do absolutely agree a more positive communication strategy would be good, as you suggest.

There is concern in the scientific community about Yellowstone erupting too.

More importantly, there is no way this government would risk significant backlash globally for making it up.

I didn’t say they made it up - the point was about the communication strategy attached to it and what that sought to achieve vs the ethical issues probably caused as a result. I’m sure it will be reflected on in the future when all this has moved on and the immediate pressures have receded.

Yes, and it will. It could be next week. But likely not. You still cannot ignore it as the consequences could easily be as bad as Covid.

So you warn, minimise risks and prepare the public but hope it becomes another generations problem. Or is not the big deal it could be if it happens but hopefully never will be.

They have to do that with the variants that attack certain spikes because until the data appears to show otherwise they could make the vaccines less effective. Even largely ineffective if we get really unlucky.

You cannot just wait and hope. You have to assume the worst and hope for the best. Which happily is usually the outcome.

We ramped up our vaccination programme partly because of that awareness of risk and what might be as the UK has the best global tech that spots these things first.

So we were warning everyone not just British citizens.
