Between reading some of the promising data on this thread, and the Daily Mail and Guardian both begging for a pre Christmas lockdown today, I’m wondering if we’re even talking about the same bloody disease.

This is the obvious answer to the NHS's issues right now. Do away with the 10 day isolation requirement.

Raab on Radio 4 now saying that they still don’t have ‘hard data’ on its severity, so until they have that they presumably won’t reduce the isolation time. By extension, with the same logic, they surely cannot put the country into a harder lockdown if they don’t have the same data on severity. Johnson expected to deliver a press conference this afternoon.

We have gone from next couple of days for the data to now them saying they still don’t have it and why? Because it’s not as bad as first feared but they still want to impose restrictions because the NHS is in such a shit state.

Well yeah. I’ve said on here loads of times before, those two papers in particular are the worst offenders.

The thing is, the FT will have got shitloads of traffic and subscriptions over covid, not because of printing sensationalist bullshit, but because of their outstanding data visualisation team.

The Guardian could have gone down this route too but instead chose a race to the bottom with the tabloids.

However, if refucing the isolation period for one group encouraged more people to socialize and, in turn, increase the number of people presenting in hospitals, then that policy might backfire. That would be especially dangerous if the variant proved more severe than we currently imagine. I can see the bind the authorities are in at the moment.

The bind they are all in is years of austerity and the continued stripping of capacity from the NHS and social care.

We now must all pay for that by having restrictions and lockdowns imposed on us.

We had a minister on the tv this morning imploring us to save our education system ffs by ex teacher’s volunteering to go teach again.

This is the bit that I think a lot of people miss.

It's easy to make throwaway comments on a forum saying say it's milder and there is anecdotal evidence etc.
A bit harder to take that on faith when you are in a position of responsibility where your decisions could cost people their lives.

I said it several times here on Saturday night: there will be a reason that the government and SAGE are making the comments they are and are considering hard choices - and it's nothing to do with simply annoying the public.

Hopefully Omicron is a storm in a teacup ..... but they have to be sure.

As I have my main residence and half of my family in South Africa, I don’t see their data and real world experience as ‘anecdotal’ bud and I read their news as much as I do the UK’s. I think that may be why I’m of a different mindset, they’re a month ahead of us on this.

I agree with you in essence, but the state of the NHS is only part of the problem. The same thing is happening across Europe, for example in the Netherlands and Denmark, though they’re imposing stricter restrictions. The Dutch have put in place a lockdown until January 17th, so I’m not anticipating much change on either side of the North Sea until the second week of the new year. By that time the scientists will have their own national data and draw their own conclusions; conclusions that many will already have reached themselves.

The moment we started making national distinctions with South Africa, this Christmas period was going to be torpedoed, but I’m hopeful it will be the last such sacrifice we need to make. It’s just frustrating having to live through it.

No one official ( science wise ) has said we'll know if its less/more deadly in days. Most said it takes months to know for sure.

but when you think in the space of 3.5 weeks, Omicron was identified, Risk assessed, Detected for sure that it has significant immune evasion and spreads far far faster. and we are starting to see results from studies saying that it seems to be infecting the Broncus rather than getting into the lungs which is good as it then doesn't go on to cause pneumonia. thats actually a hell of a lot of information very quickly.

I don’t think you will. Other countries with less ’protection’ have already imposed lockdowns, and during this period the UK generally goes into an almost self-imposed lockdown anyway. If sport Is cancelled because of cases amongst participants, then there will be a negligible amount of movement around the country.
