You mean the ones where we went below the first wave 5 days ago and the media still have not noticed and even the press conference on Monday said we had not when we had?
dont worry they were eventually updated on the main news services yesterday after lunch, i noticed

Regional Summary

Most places up a bit.

North West and the two Midlands regions the highest numbers still.

GM had a relatively good day.

Stockport not so much losing its long held best Pop score record in GM to Trafford still clocking low numbers somehow.

Can Andy Burnham not go there and find out how?

Very bad day for Bolton who succeeded in doubling case numbers AND having the exact same number as Manchester - 140 each - which is a real shock. Though Bolton has been the problem child of GM for a week or two now.

Everyone else below 100. Oldham had its lowest number in weeks too (both it and Trafford in the 30s).

So total only up 23 to 764. And as the NW rose by 111 to 1846 that equates to a drop from 42.7 to 41.4% of the NW total in GM.

More good news on England hospital numbers. Everywhere down again.

Patients 16, 458 - down 635 in day - was 20, 926 last Wednesday.

Ventilated 2391 - down 91 in day - was 2872 last Wednesday.

Regionally everywhere down on both measures.

London Patients down 208 to 3292 -was 4279 last Wednesday & Ventilators down 41 to 749 - was 905 last Wednesday

Midlands Patients down 141 to 3325 - was 4258 last Wednesday & Ventilators down 13 to 455 - was 557 last Wednesday

NE & Yorkshire down 29 to 2391 - was 2847 last Wednesday & Ventilators down 7 to 280 - was 302 last Wednesday

North West Patients down 122 to 2391 - was 3000 last Wednesday & Ventilators down 7 to 289 - was 342 last Wednesday

Encouraging numbers for North West in particular as these are the biggest drops in what seems an accelerating fall which should translate into fewer death in coming week or two.

I am a bit sceptical myself but it was evident that photographers were exaggerating how busy the beaches were by using long angle pics. Reporters on the ground said that social was being complied with from what they could see.

There was a massive pile on against the people who went to the beaches but we don’t know their circumstances eg did they live in flats or have garden to take in the sun etc. the holier than thou crowd tried to compare beach goers with big house parties that carried far greater risks from Covid.
We went to Formby for the day last year and I can honestly say people were keeping their distance from each other, I obviously can’t say that about other areas or days but the images I saw didn’t fit the narrative the press were running with.

I agree that some Countries seem to be shooting themselves in the foot. FWIW my mate who is a care worker in Holland got the Oxford / AZ jab yesterday. He had been due to get the Pfizer vaccine on 8th January IIRC. It seems they Pfizer haven’t been able to meet EU expectations in terms of quantities delivered but there isn’t an agenda to criticise Pfizer.
When Macron had a pop at the Oxford/AZ vaccine the other week I thought it was beyond idiotic of him to do that. Bearing in mind that France has one of the most vaccine-sceptic populations on earth, his comment could have tapped further into the insecurities of these people and maybe even increased the numbers of anti-vaxxers over there at a time when they need a higher take-up, not a lower one.

Great stuff. As long as these keep dropping that is all that matters. Was just thinking that even if we got 2/3k cases a few weeks from now that shouldn't be many deaths presuming vaccines do their job. Even with a IFR of 0.5% that's 1 in every 200. That's only be a handful of deaths then. Very manageable.

Formby was one of the places that was on the news last summer as being full of "irresponsible sunseekers" enjoying themselves but I never saw it myself on trips up there.

I see that a study into the B. 1. 1. 7 variant as caught by (if I understood rightly) NBA players or staff in the US might explain our current stubborn cases plateauing.

Seems to suggest instead of a higher viral load causing problems this might be down to persistence of infection.

So if you get it you tend to have a hard time getting rid of it though it seems not to make you any more sick as such.

If that study is true then it might suggest why we are plateauing but hospitalisations are still going down - a strain that turns up in tests even weeks after you caught it much as if you caught it this week. But no more likely to put you in hospital.

I would imagine a high infectivity rate has more advantage to a virus in survival terms than a high fatality rate would,

Perhaps the end game will be to morph into a virus that almost anyone can catch but almost nobody will die from. Much as the vaccines attempt to persuade it to do.

Do not know the science well enough to know if that might be what is happening
