Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

I think at this stage it is fully dawning on them that this season is dead and buried.
They will now be looking at how they can salvage next season.
People may only just be realising that matches behind closed doors will be the only option for the 2020/2021 season.
If they allow SKY/BT/Amazon access to all matches including 3.pm's. They may be able to increase TV revenues, but will have to give clubs more to cover match day loses.

Those saying they won't watch, must understand this isn't a prefered option for anybody. It's a needs must scenario, and everybody will have to adapt for the time being.
It will be unique, and maybe they will have to feed some generic crowd noise (red button option?)

There is no way they will just cancel football until it is safe for crowds.
There is no way it will be safe to have large crowd gathering for at least 6-12 months. So it is what it is.

Things might change if data starts to point to enough herd/mass immunity to allow crowds back again.
They may even allow people under a certain age to attend games first, and increase that age when things improve.

Very good post and a season behind closed doors with every game shown on TV is probably what will have to happen.

I know what you are saying and don’t disagree. However it is a personal thing and I for one will not be watching football on the TV played behind closed doors.

I have missed my visits to the Etihad but have surprised myself by how little I have missed watching on TV. The break from the plethora of pompous pathetic pundits has been a real tonic.

The problem with that is some clubs get next to nothing from ifollow and apart from eh solidarity payment would get nothing else and the same costs.

If you lose 75-90% of your income for a year, and rely on £8 of a £10 follow fee per match competing directly against premier league clubs, the clubs with lower fan bases would be lucky to raise £1k per game. The owners of smaller clubs tend to have UK businesses which are currently shut or struggling, no chance of lasting a season behind closed doors.

It will end up with reserve teams in the football league to make up numbers and end up as bad as Spain in terms of depth of quality.

I’m a fair man and feel it wrong that Lpool are not recognised in some way if the season is voided.
They should award a merit shield which they could buy from a trophy shop. One of those plastic type designs they get at the local league presentation night.

and all the players and staff should be given a box of Quality Street maybe even stretch to a hamper for Sir Jordan Henderson and Klippety

I don’t think it would stop any of the premier league clubs surviving but agree that it will probably be the end for so many lower league clubs. I actually sadly can’t see a way out for them. The greed from the top was already making it so hard for them and this will probably be the final nail. The premier league will probably still have the main TV deal and then their could be PPV style set up on the extra games that will be broadcast. Maybe though due to the unique situation and the fact it will come down to a vote the cartel will not be able to enforce the PPV style to suit them and every game is just broadcast and the TV companies pay extra for this giving everyone a fairly even split for a year.

Long term it will play into the big clubs hands like everything does in the end because once the 3pm law is lifted it won’t be brought back which will mean even more money for the big clubs selling the rights once crowds are back in stadiums.

Totally agree.wouldnt watch 1 minute if it was played behind closed doors.
Football is a spectator sport.
It's that simple

Just seen something on BBC from Scottish First Minister re football in Scotland .....
Spectator events are a long way off ....need vaccine to be safe and behind closed doors is not a done deal either as problems in social distancing.
Are you watching scouse....

Just read an article, not football related but very significant, Italy and Spain govts are discussing at ministerial level the possibility of closing their borders to all non nationals. Spain until January 2020, Italy until March 31st 2021.
Australia have already done it so it is feasible.
That’ll put and end to european football unless special dispensation is given.
