FA charge for Diego Costa
Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association following an alleged stamping incident involving Liverpool’s Emre Can.
The alleged offence, which was missed by match officials, occurred during Chelsea’s Capital One Cup semi-fianl secong leg victory over Liverpool on Tuesday night.
However, following a review of the video evidence, the Spanish striker has been charged and has until 6pm on Thursday to respond.
“Diego Costa has been charged by The FA for violent conduct following an on-field incident which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video,” an FA statement read.
“The charge is in relation to an incident involving the Chelsea forward and Liverpool’s Emre Can which occurred in the 12th minute of the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge last night.
“The player has until 6pm on Thursday, January 29 2015 to respond to the charge.
“Following a review of an incident during the game involving Costa and Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel, the FA will not be taking any further action.”
Costa will face a three-match ban if found guilty which will rule him out of Saturday’s Premier League top of the table clash with Manchester City. He will also miss Chelsea’s games against Everton and Aston Villa.
The Capital One Cup is a Football League competition and, as such, the disciplinary process differs slightly from a Premier League match where a three-man panel of former referees decides whether charges should be laid following any alleged incident.
In this case, when it was determined that neither referee Michael Oliver or any of his assistants saw the incident, footage was reviewed to determine if a sending-off offence had occurred.
If Costa denies the charge, his appeal will be heard on Friday which means that a decision on his eligibility to face Manchester City will be made well in advance of the game.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who was fined £25,000 earlier on Wednesday for claiming there was a “clear campaign” against his side, insisted after the match that both stamps were “absolutely accidental”.
This season the Setanta Sports pack will show 71 live Barclays Premier League games and 35 exclusively live European Rugby Champions Cup games including key games for the Irish Provinces. Sign up here.
