Top Clubs Looking for New Inspiration With Major Summer Managerial Changes
European football will suffer a major managerial shake-up this summer as top clubs seek to find the missing ingredient for success, or in some cases, find a replacement for a successful parting boss.
The most public move has been drawn out for over a year, but it is the majoritely held view that the inevitable will happen and Jose Mourinho will leave Internazionale in the summer, regardless of whether the Milan side finally claim the elusive Champions League.
Mourinho, seeking freedom from the Italian media and the constraints that he believes Italian football has on him as a manager and a person, is desperate to leave Italy and is looking at options in England and Spain, but which clubs are the most likely to take him on?
The obvious choice is Real Madrid, who after humiliatingly being dumped out of the Champions League under boss Manuel Pellegrini, would be enticed at the prospect of having a proven Champions League winner in Mourinho in charge, according to Spanish paper La Marca and Guillem Balague. However, after spending a massive amount of money last summer, there are considerably less resources for Madrid to play with this summer, with Florentino Perez well aware of the pressure on him and the club, he is eager for a manager able to control the big ego's in the Real dressing room. However Madrid is not Mourinho's only possible destination this summer.
England is another option. Mourinho is known to enjoy life here and there are several options. English Champions Manchester United are an outside possibility if Alex Ferguson decides to step down this summer, but this seems unlikely. As does Liverpool, who's sheer lack of resources means that it would restrict Mourinho is his role, something he does not enjoy. The most likely option is the infinitely rich Manchester City, who are seeking a manager able to give them instant success, and their manager Roberto Mancini is only under a 6 month deal, which has a 3 year option attached to it, something Mancini admitted in his debut press conference that chief executive Garry Cook then tried to cover up, but Mancini is apparently on his way out regardless, with Juventus looking to appoint him in the summer on a 3 year deal to replace Ciro Ferrara, who had a dissappointing reign in charge and Juventus were also humiliated in the Champions League and Europa League this season, according to Italian newspaper La Stampa. With current temporary coach Alberto Zaccheroni's deal up in the summer, Juventus are looking to Mancini to bring stability and success to the club.
AC Milan are also in the market for a new manager. Under-fire coach Leonardo is expected to be relieved of his duties in the summer, after an embarrassing showing in the Champions League to Manchester United. Leonardo is likely to remain in his position of head coach till the summer so that minimal disruption is caused during the domestic Serie A campaign. Marco Van Basten and Jurgen Klinsmann have been mentioned for the role but unless AC Milan overcome Roma and Inter to become Serie A champions, Leonardo is expected to be let go in the summer according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.
Another startling possibility is the possible departure from FC Barcelona of Pep Guardiola, who despite winning 6 trophies last season, is coming to the end of a 2 year deal and has refused to commit to the club till after the internal presidential elections in the summer. Guardiola has cited in interviews that he feels the pressure of the job and is becoming worn out, so it isn't out of the realms of possibility that he may leave, and he will attract the attention of both english and italian clubs, especially Inter Milan according to Spanish journalist Guillem Balague. It is also another option for Jose Mourinho, with a possible swap on the cards if Guardiola decides to leave the Camp Nou. This would leave the door open for Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez to return home to the Bernabeu to manage Real Madrid, having also won the Champions League and his Liverpool side struggling on all fronts this season and a severe lack of resources available, could decide to return to Spain with the spanish giants.
Either way, it will be a fascinating summer on the managerial front, and with the World Cup, there may be several international managers looking for employment as well as several high profile nations seeking a boss to lead them into the next international tournaments.
