The numbers who have had it twice for sure globally are so tiny that every instance has been documented. Millions have had it and not apparently caught it again.

So it looks to be a rarity or it would naturally be obvious given how every nation on Earth is focused on this virus and it dominates the media so they would not have been missed.

And there is a always a small number who can be re-infected with any disease. Usually down to anomalies of their own immune system. So in of itself this is not a surprise with Covid.

But Covid is only a year old. So we do not know if you get more likely to catch it again as time passes and your immunity to it possibly wanes or the virus itself changes to make that easier.

What we do know so far and from past diseases is that those who catch it twice usually have some residual ability to diminish its potency.

So I cannot see any reason to think this is going to be a serious problem going forward.

Only that it might mean Covid is never literally eradicated from the face of the Earth.

But then there are many rare and deadly diseases of which that is true that we do not shape our lives around

Victory will be when Covid becomes another one of these.

Most experts seem to believe covid will be with us for the long term. I think its right to say that only smallpox has ever been eliminated completely?

The end game seems to be that either it circulates widely, most people are exposed as children/ young adults with mild disease and any later reinfections are not severe, or vaccination keeps levels low enough that its not a significant health issue.

[Edit meant to add that it looks likely that circulation in animals will prevent eradication, even if it were otherwise possible in humans]

I work on the assumption that news released is actually a bit behind the current situation i.e. they're maybe another step ahead of what were actually being told. Especially the way it's been delivered. Imagine it it goes major tits up the effects mentally on the world will be almost as bad as the virus.

To use a @Two Gun Bob type analogy it's like new improved toothpaste/washing powder/TV's, which are always the best ever...they tend to have at least another more improved step in hand at least,I fucking hope so.

Puzzling as to why two mRNA vaccines Pfizer and Moderna have such radically different storage requirements. I suspect it's down to the lipid carrier but the mRNA itself can not be that different and yet the two research groups have come up with what looks like two radically different solutions.

And despite the doom merchants, anti vaxers, and twats that just like wallowing in the misery and drama, I believe we are just a few months from that becoming the case.

A lot of things are like that, especially with technology.

They have the technology for what will be about the iPhone 17, same for cars, technology systems that are miles more advanced than the cars that are actually coming out now.

This isn't a biological weapon, it's a vaccine that makes the immune system aware of the Coronavirus spikes to reduce it's ability to replicate and infect the body.

As with any vaccine there will be risks but they will be no different to taking any form of medicine. Problems will be limited to common (1 in 10) harmless side effects and a very limited subset of rare (1 in 100,000+) type side effects.

More people will die of coronavirus today then will ever die or be harmed long term by the vaccine.
 
Scottish data up first (late as Nicola Sturgeon introducing new measures in Scottish parliament today):

39 deaths

832 cases

1239 patients (up 13)

102 on ventilators (down 3)
 
Sadly England hospital deaths not cheery either. Worst yet for NW.

Big catch up though always seen today and tomorrow from weekends remember.

300 deaths with 114 of them in the NW.

This is by far the most deaths recorded in the NW on one day for months.

(Last Tuesday it was 225 with 80 from the NW and was even higher on Wednesday at 302).

So not auguring well tomorrow and we might even pass 500 all settings deaths today and/or tomorrow.
 
Finally Northern Ireland, sad death numbers again but otherwise still the best of all the UK nations.

The one place we can say for sure that their measures seem to have worked consistently.

Deaths 11

Cases 514

Rolling 7 day total for cases down again to 3736.

Patients in hospital 420 (down 6)

Ventilated 39 (down 4).
 
So the UK deaths today are 372 - last week it was 263 - so big increase sadly.

When the out of hospital numbers were added to the 263 last week it became 397.

So it is very possible that we will top 500 later today.
 
Scotland 3 wks ago v 2 wks v last wk v today:

Deaths 28 v 25 v 28 v 39 today

Cases 1456 v 1327 v 999 v 832 today - a better number here showing steady decline.

Patients 824 v 1100 v 1254 v 1239 today - a FALL in patient numbers much like we saw across a lot of last week in North West England. Though a lot of deaths in both places will be part of why.

Ventilated 69 v 82 v 92 v 102 - stable increases but again will be impacted by the death numbers no doubt.
 
Wales 3 wks ago v 2 wks v last wk v today

Deaths 10 v 7 v 4 v 22 today

Cases 1168 v 1207 v 1198 v 444 today - BIG drop here this week. Lowest in a long time.
 
N Ireland 3 wks v 2 ewks v last wk v today

Deaths: 3 v 15 v 6 v 11 today

Cases: 913 v 722 v 570 v 514 today - steady fall during the restrictions.

7 day rolling total fell 6493 v 4629 v 3736 today showing this was consistent over the whole week not a one off

Patients 286 v 360 v 413 v 420 - again the deaths will be a factor but the circuit breaker clearly coincided with a marked slowing of hospitalisations.

Ventilators 25 v 33 v 44 v 39 - much the same but with likely more impact from the deaths.
