Pence has already stated that the admin are going to attempt to ensure public (Medicare/Medicaid) and private insurance “covers” the cost of testing.

But the practicality of that is being disputed by many legal and healthcare industry analysts (as it would take legislation specifically forcing private insurance to directly pay for any costs associated with testing).

I think it should be done, of course, as not doing it will lead to many more people not seeking testing or treatment to avoid the cost (many will do that anyway, regardless of whether the testing or treatment is “free”, as the potential of being confirmed to have it and being forced to self-isolate would also ruin them financially). But I do agree it goes against the supposed American ideals of free market capitalism. But those ideals are often at odds with the public (and, ironically, economic) good.

I don't disagree with you that it "should be done". However, a private business is a private business in the States, no? I note the key word here is "attempt".

Very nicely input, Mr Pence.

Like you've hinted at, imagine asking the insurance companies to cover the costs of testing. Wouldn't that hit their profit margin? If that's the case, wouldn't they ask the gov to subsidise coverage?

And if that's the case wouldn't that be 'socialising medicine'?

And, if that's the case, wouldn't that be red scare of communism...??

Funny when a snake eats itself.

Is it just me that does that? Wondered why the cleaners at the gym have started giving me death stares, and one shoulder barged me the other day. Might explain it.
Did you dive after the shoulder barge, scream at the top of your voice, hold your face even though the cleaner didn’t touch your face and then roll your face through your goz on the floor?

I know we all love football but footballers are a right bunch of weird cunts! I’ll never understand this bad acting bollocks they all do.

But surely a “NO SPITTING” campaign needs to be the next step after the pointless no handshakes pre-game.

it helps win their team a free kick or penalty and get the opposition player a card.

Oh, you already know my thoughts on the abject hypocrisy of the current US government, so no need to expound on that here.

I am just sharing the reasons I think the US (and separately UK) pandemic response has been inadequate. They could of course turn it around, but the delay of comprehensive action will have already done harm and will likely compound future harm (which is a point I was trying to make to another poster earlier today; there is a cost to delaying action and it is often a magnifying factor for later costs).

So Germans do breath... interesting. Your health service is working well by the way, judging by the numbers.
Italians nicking my material again.

Just like that incident with Roberto Benigni, I’ll never forgive you.

I have to say the last couple of days have been encouraging. Yes, the numbers are still increasing rapidly around the globe, but in several cases, the increases are less than we would expect if this was to follow pure exponential growth. +52 cases in the UK (up from 321) is only a 17% increase. Similar yesterday. This is much better than the 30%, 40% or 50% type figures we've seen over the preceding few days.

Of course 2 swallows do not make a summer. But it at least gives hope that perhaps the measures people are taking are starting to have an effect. I have not personally been into London for a couple of weeks now, but colleagues are saying that it is eerily quiet, in the streets and on the tube in particular. If people are staying at home more, mixing less, then hopefully perhaps the rate of increase not accelerating as fast.

17% daily increases as opposed to the previous average of circa 35% would make a HUGE difference.

By end of March:

@ +17% daily = 373 * 1.17 ^^ 21 = 10,000 cases

@ +35% daily = 373 * 1.35 ^^ 21 = 200,000 cases

Which if nothing else, only goes to show just how vital it is that we take this very seriously and EVERYONE changes their behaviour, washing more, not shaking hands, not eating (sandwiches for example) with your fingers unless you've washed your hands thoroughly, not going out as much, driving rather than going in the train. Etc. All of these combined WILL make a huge difference.

EDIT: Spain is out of control I see. Huge increases the last couple of days would tend to indicate Spanish people are not taking it as seriously as they should and are just carrying on as normal.

Interesting those figures.

Here in sleepy Nantwich things are much quieter than normal. Nobody in the cafes and as my youngest wanted to take the old bastard out for a birthday pint I risked the pub last night which was also pretty deserted.

I had to drive up to mums yesterday and the M6 and M56 seemed very quiet compared to normal, even the return journey in foul conditions just before rush hour seemed less busy than normal and the mandatory jam was absent.

Generally I am going out only when I have to now, and visits to the supermarket are when its quiet later in the evening. I personally would not go to a match if you paid me at the moment.

They say main reason is the fact they allowed all private labs in January already to do refunded covid tests,
while mosts states started on the authority levels only. They say we have won at least 1 months by doing so.

Business men/politicians talk about recession nonstop, but now scientific/medical knowledge have taken politicians by their responsibility
and finally act strictly, piling up quiclky.

Btw, German (indoor) Icehockey playoffs are canceled, no champion this year.

Bit of both but largely due to the fact that at its epicentre it seems to be contracting at pace and 56.1 cases per 1 million people have had it in total and the vast majority have recovered. Apply that in the UK with 60 million and i make that 3,600 people. Only 26 new cases in China yesterday. We are all mixing a little less hopefully washing hands etc and we have a first class NHS plus it is getting warmer soon and i think that will impact it.

Plus i have read a bit about Flu seasons ending and they do tend to abate in warmer weather.

Is it ok with you if i have that opinion or do you insist i change it?

I will tell John Nichols you dont agree with him too and you know best as always.

John Nicholls, a pathology professor at the University of Hong Kong, told financial investors on a conference call last week that he expected the virus to "burn itself out" with increased temperatures. He predicted the threat could subside by May, according to a transcript of the call that was leaked online.

there was a very good video @grunge posted earlier on this issue with temperatures and I hope you are right but a lot of scientific data released in the last 48 hours on this doesn’t necessarily support this theory for this particular virus but this article looks at two different findings
