"God told me to arrest you."
A Catholic convert with some unfashionable ideas then and now - a few quotes from his fascinating Wikipage

"Anderton praised his officers, and warned the British public during the height of the Cold War with the Soviet Union of the threat of left-wing subversion, stating in an October 1979 edition of the BBC's Question Time programme that he believed in the 1980s the primary role of the police would not be crime prevention but quelling attempts to overthrow democracy and subvert the authority of the State.

He saw the police as a means of providing moral enforcement against "social nonconformists, malingerers, idlers, parasites, spongers, frauds, cheats and unrepentant criminals", and was a vocal opponent of gay rights, feminism, pornography and those who "openly hanker[ed] after total debauchery and lewdness". When challenged by left wing Labour councillors and community activists on what they believed was his heavy-handed approach as chief constable, Anderton directly confronted his opponents and accused them of subversion, undermining police morale and threatening British democracy.

He also denounced some defence lawyers as belonging to a "Society for the Prevention of the Conviction of the Guilty", attacked the "Race Relations Industry" for creating tension between ethnic minority groups and the wider population and detected a threat by left-wing extremists operating in the trade union movement and in society in general. He called for the introduction of National ID cards, and the creation of a national police force – thereby abolishing local police authorities – especially in the case of monitoring British football hooliganism.

We have two choices in the police force - either we stay where we are and die or we ignominiously cut and run. As long as it is in my power, I have no intention of leaving my officers unprotected...I shall never abandon the citizens of Greater Manchester to the mercy of rioters, rapists, looters and criminals."

Times may change.

Vallance

Deaths will continue to go up for approx two more weeks

Transmission rate of hospital numbers was a doubling about every 3 days, now about every six days, because of lockdown, also slowing in the community

Still room in the NHS for everything that is needed, all conditions

Daily briefing bbc news
very good news Karen about the transmision rate, you slow that and this afects all the figures

Charming fellah.
Also cost the local taxpayers a fortune fitting up that businessman Kevin ?, friend of Stalker.

why would they pretty much shut everything down then ?

Pretty much being the operative words. This is a soft lockdown. Anyone with half a brain knew there would still be plenty with no choice but to go to work. Lots of industries like construction are still going on too. They also know, like we all do, that people will get tired and start to take the piss and head out anyway... we all know there will be absolutely loads out pushing the boundaries this weekend yet we're in a soft lockdown still.

It's a constant drip feed of people still picking it up. There is no way they want to fully stop this. If they did we'd be under vastly more stringent lockdown measures. And we're not. They are still pursuing a minor level of herd immunity. I'm certain of it.

I was at a Morrisons earlier to get the elderly parents weekly shop , I was amazed at how little people were buying why go to a supermarket and just buy 2 or 3 items ? A guy in front of me had two cases of beer a cake and a loaf of bread !? It took him nearly 45 mins to get that due a bit of queing on entering and to get to the till to pay .

and why 1/3 of people saying the police are being heavy handed about social distancing
Think probably both right, until we get a vaccine. We can’t lock down until a vaccine or until the country is virus free, even if we did we’d have to stop travel, so we will rely on it spreading slowly at some point.
We also can’t overload the nhs so at the moment that’s through current measures and after a relaxation there will still be some measures to try and control the speed of spread.

So that the NHS aren’t overwhelmed. It’s clear to see it’s been like a balancing act with the scientists and the government trying to get as many people to get it without overwhelming the NHS.

I think in the official league table of deaths (grim)

the uk is now 5th , that’s not good.

to me you can lock down people in their homes but if you continue to allow flights to come into the country and have done throughout the whole crisis , without any medical checks at the border then what is the fucking point.
