What is it with this pointless argument?

It is blindingly obvious that COVID is far more deadly than any kind of flu. Why do people persist with some daft attempt at trying to prove otherwise??? It's truly bizarre.

When did we last need a national (or global?) lockdown for flu? When did we need to introduce compulsory social distancing and mask-wearing for flu?

It's an idiotic comparison.

Well, the answers for that from some quarters will be...

'It's started'
'The control has begun...'

etc.

So 36 UK hospital deaths today v 18 last week (doubling seems a very obvious pattern this week).

Last week those 14 became 27 in the all settings deaths. I will be very happily surprised if we are below 50 today.

Dont forget the all settings is the number everybody quotes in the media. It usually goes up via data from care homes etc. Though those two five month old English hospital cases might be removed today.

It is up to you but that is a choice between hearing what the facts are and hearing what you want the facts to be.

The facts are just data and do not lie but people lie about the data or kid themelve over it.

We all do. I might well be doing by acting pessimistic.

But the numbers are what really matter as you can choose how to react to them quite freely and they will remain what they are either way.

the problem is a fact as in a statistical fact will be interpreted through the prism of someone’s personal circumstances - simple example - pensioned person who is higher risk for cv with no financial issues vs parent with no/less job security who is lower risk for cv

there are some very binary views on here and the reality is that this is a highly nuanced situation.

Common denominator seems to be with dissatisfaction and frustration with no.10 on testing and messaging with no.11 coming in for a periodic round of applause

Cases from the three nations are 1151 - a new record without England yet added.

Last week the number was 551 - so as you can see it has doubled in a week.

England added 3771 a week ago to total 4322. Not doubling that number today after the England numbers are added would be a victory of sorts.

The only figures that can be used are the total deaths per day, those are the only ones recorded since the start, and even then not accurately, you can not cure it and you can not stop it, there is no point to curfews, unless someone has invented a way of stopping kids from getting it,Stopping the NHS from being overwhelmed has been done, we are in the hands of annalists now all wanting to keep their jobs.

speed rushing a Vaccine is extremely dangerous, but the justification is that there is a virus killing hundreds of thousands around the world and infection rates are going through the roof.
So, it's possible extreme measures may need to be taken, it's not a wild proposition.

That is not how vaccines or any other drug testing goes , nobody will sign off on a vaccine being safe until all the steps are done and the trials involve hundreds of thousands per trials and all the side effects are found and evaluated , i thought everyone would know that by now

This virus is unprecedented, it is a global pandemic

It's hardly surprising there is suggestions out there to fast track a vaccine

No the death numbers are not certain, initially care homes did not releases the numbers, now it is said they are exaggerating the numbers, but they are more accurate than the testing of people who believe they have the symptoms, a curfew will not stop a virus without a cure it will only prolong it, and as you said the Flu is due and that is a virus that adapts and mutates, given the choice i would prefer to fight one at a time.
