Sorry for putting a dampener on a fun thread. But contrary to how the story has gone for 50 years, the Zaire defender was well aware of the laws of the game. His actions were out of desperation to waste as much time as possible. As, if they lost that game 4-0 or worse, they had been informed by the President of the country that there would be "serious consequences" after they were humiliated 9-0 in the previous game against Yugoslavia.

It's actually a very interesting and sad story, how things turned to shit for the first black African team to ever qualify for a World Cup Finals.
