Truly pathetic. Apart from Root and Butler the batsmen only just garnered enough runs between them to beat the total extras.
Root should be sacked immediately as captain. The priority this morning was wickets but he allowed the bowlers to self indulgently mount a revenge bouncer war. I wont bother mentioning his abysmal field setting. Botham was sacked mid series for less.

There’s long been a culture of the England captain allowing his bowlers too much leeway. Root, or whoever replaces him, needs to be more ruthless and demanding of them. We might as well fuck off playing “test” 1,2 and 3’s. We haven’t got any. There’s none coming through. Get malan in and maybe some of the white ball lads in. Or persevere with Pope and put him at 3. Burns (because there’s no one else), malan, Pope, root, bairstow, Livingstone, butler (but play attacking), Willy, Robinson, Anderson, broad for next test
