Don’t think any batsman has scored a century in each of a 5 match series. Could Root do it?
Purely on talent and technique, there's no reason why not. He's far and away the best batsman in the current England set up. He seems to be struggling a bit out there now. Looking a bit stiff. Don't think he'll be taking any quick singles at the moment!

The game has moved on slightly since those days. What worked 40 years ago will not necessarily work these days.
Agree. 40 years ago they didn't have the army of analysts and coaches that they do today and the role of the captain is not as crucial today in the longer format at least. In white ball cricket where the game moves quicker having an instinctive and innovative captain is more of a necessity, but even then they have to contribute with ball or bat.
He's not a great captain but there are currently no credible alternatives and a lot of the criticism is unwarranted imo. Lords last week fair enough but it's every time we concede a large total as if having an 'innovator' in charge would mean we'd dismiss every team for less than 300. I'm sure there's plenty of Indians currently banging away on their keyboards bemoaning Kohli and his 'schoolboy field placings' and conservative decision at the toss.
