Purely on talent and technique, there's no reason why not. He's far and away the best batsman in the current England set up. He seems to be struggling a bit out there now. Looking a bit stiff. Agree. 40 years ago they didn't have the army of analysts and coaches that they do today and the role of the captain is not as crucial today in the longer format at least. In white ball cricket where the game moves quicker having an instinctive and innovative captain is more of a necessity, but even then they have to contribute with ball or bat.The game has moved on slightly since those days. What worked 40 years ago will not necessarily work these days.
