I think 20/20 has had a detrimental effect on Test Cricket. I love the short form of the game but digging in for a long stint at the crease is now long gone for most players. I think we have to be realistic and shorten Test Cricket to 4 days and not get hung up on the Captain’s performance. Root has done a decent job, it’s a changing game, I absolutely agree with you, Stokes won’t last long, great player but not a Test Match Cricket Captain IMHO.

How does making it 4 days help?

Most England games are done in about 3 these days.

I think somebody else could have done the same job as root ? But would have not been give half the time root was given, but we will never know now

It’s the expectation that Test Cricket is a 5 day game and the purists still look to form an opinion that’s how it should be played. I think truncating the game to a maximum of 4 days may ease the pressure.
