I'm not one for name-dropping, but I was introduced to Joe Root once at a cricket lunch in London.

It was before he had made the Test side, but he was a very pleasant young man, respectful and not a bit bumptious.

I tried to persuade him to sign for Lancashire, but he played a dead bat to my blandishments.

Bye-bye the cares of captaincy! Has done wonders for him.
Did he mention his worry about getting hate Mail from the Ancoats area?

Well there’s being positive and then there’s being stupid! Utterly brainless that Stokes. It’s a test match and you’re 150 behind and you have Root on 100+ at the other end. You’ve done the hard work with good positive cricket. If we collapse and lose now it’s on the skipper I’m afraid

Bairstow < Brook purrlease

Brook scored 76 at Hampshire this afternoon, ten 4s and one 6. Bairstow, for Vaughan, plays best when he has a point to prove and his position is under threat, so I expect he’ll still get a chance at Headingley. If he doesn’t perform again, however, then Brook might get his chance against the South Africans.
