Stokes played similarly at Lord’s and rode his luck, but it rather feels as if that’s the role he’s designated himself (blessed by the management?), which with a solid top 5 above and only Foakes behind him does make some sense. Won’t be able to play that way at all times, of course, so it’ll be interesting to see whether he can adapt when the circumstances dictate caution.
 
Brook scored 76 at Hampshire this afternoon, ten 4s and one 6. Bairstow, for Vaughan, plays best when he has a point to prove and his position is under threat, so I expect he’ll still get a chance at Headingley. If he doesn’t perform again, however, then Brook might get his chance against the South Africans.
I just think Bairstow has played very little red ball this season where as Brook is continually hitting runs.
I don’t dislike Bairstow btw.
