Question. What use is Root, really? Apart from having a pleasant smile, and giving @ancoats a chance to moan…?

its simple ? head boy at ECB and the captain of england look after each other

ODI and 20/20 cricket is now bigger than test cricket and players make so much more money from this type of cricket
so root will always be picked because of the central contracts system and he gets both ODI and test cricket

root as a cricketer was a wonderful player and great prospect, but since being named captain its shown him for what he is just a great cricket player not a captain, its painful at times watching root being england captain at test cricket
does he really want to be captain of england ? at times it looks like he just lets others set fields on what type of bowler is bowling ? just look the other night eion morgan took control of the game and set every field and walked every bowler through the plan, that's what a good captain does wins games when really you should lose

I can't work out if this England team are brilliant because the batting lineup is so deep that one of them always has a big innings, or they're on the precipice of disaster because one of them always needs to have a huge innings to bail out the others who got out so cheaply.

They are brilliant and this is possibly the first time in odi cricket that England have had such a depth. Be it test or one days watching this long tail is disheartening for any opposition. Be thankful
