Cricket Thread

As someone who enjoys watching cricket, but barely understands it…. I’m interested as to why we would declare at any point here?

I understand that we want to wrap up the test before the bad weather kicks in this weekend. But wouldn’t it be better to throw caution to the wind (rather than declare) and just play 20/20 style cricket until everyone is out?
Yes we will be throwing the bat tomorrow and getting as many runs possible in as quick a time. However, if it goes well it would be prudent to calm it a day at some point ( likely hood around lunchtime unless the forcast gets better ) because you run the risk of not giving yourself enough time and although you scored a lead of 280 for example and then time ran out when they were 249/9 you would be hoping that you declared. Its fine margins, just like the majority of the series
If things go well, we will have around 220 /250 by lunchtime that's when I'd call it a day and if they get more, hopefully we still have rime to mop it up in a second innings

Test match cricket can be the greatest sport. 5 days (sometimes) of all emotions and the Ashes has given us moments where it goes the distance. But inevitably the rain at OT will bring out the issues again.

It stops raining. 20mins later they do a pitch inspection. They announce a restart 20mins later, by which time it is raining again. Or it's dry all morning but as they don't start until 11am they're waiting for the rain! Little things that should be tidied up. Or having a lunch break when they've not played a moments cricket.

Following City will always be number 1 but I prefer test cricket as a game still. I'm not an avid follower, but basketball always seems like the perfect sport. A shot clock and the fact you can't go back into your defensive half once you've passed halfway mean you can't just see out a win by playing keep ball or rolling around. It forces drama. Maybe the tactics in seeing out a game are therefore lacking, but forcing teams to attack through the rules of the game is a positive for me.

Stokes and Brook need to spend a few overs playing themselves back in — nights often have a tricky impact on concentration — then start the savagery.
Nothing would be more tragic than to lose the Ashes to the rain. If the met office is to be trusted, Saturday will be almost entirely washed out. Especially in the north-west. But some play on Sunday. We need to be taking a few Australian wickets today.

Get a lead of 250 before 20 minutes before lunch. Stick em in for 10 minutes. Have em 2 down at lumch and then bowl em out just after tea! Easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Realistically it looks a decent track, but with some variable bounce.
Root bowls well at OT and might get some purchase with his offies.

Get to 500. If that's quick, go to 550.
Have best part of a couple of sessions at Australia today, and Sunday afternoon (maybe, obviously the rain may miss all day) - it'll be about getting 4 or 5 out today.
