I think people prefer having their baser needs met to some abstract idea of freedom. The reality is if you live in a poor country, the choice isn't authoritarian vs free, it's authoritarian regime versus massively flawed and corrupt democracy that inevitably results in another authoritarian regime. And it's easy to sit in a rich, free country and criticise people for choosing the devil they know.Nothing to do with bombing. I am saying that many people seem to prefer authoritarian regimes. Period. Left wing, right wing, hard line Islam. All these ideologies promise to look after you in return for your blind and complete obedience to the ideology and it seems to suit many, many, people just fine. But it's not for me and I support the right of people like me to have a choice via free elections. i.e Democracy.
In another sense though (perhaps the one you were referring to), a dangerous number of people are only in favour of getting the outcome they want, and not particularly concerned with how they get it. They're not particularly concerned with a politician cheating, lying, or even breaking the law, as long as it's someone on 'their side' doing it. As long as the authoritarian regime is broadly doing things they approve of, they don't really care if the opposition ends up in prison. Let's be honest, a hell of a lot of people who want Trump gone would not care if it was done via assassination, for example. Nor would a large number of his supporters care particularly if he ordered an assassination of a political enemy.
