Can someone clear up what the situation is.

I know England gets 3 places for what will be known as the Europa League next season.

1 goes to the 5th placed team and the other two go to the cup winners.

What happens if the cup winners are already in the Champions League? Do the runners up in the cup get the European spot or does it go to the 6th and then 7th placed team?

If United win the Carling Cup then the Uefa spot goes to the league. It will also go to the league if Spurs win it and also qualify through the league (they won't, probably).

I hear they might be changing this rule but if the team who wins the FA Cup has already qualified for europe then the Uefa spot will go to the runner up UNLESS they have already qualified for europe themselves as well.

So potentially rather than it just being 5th place on offer for the Uefa Cup it could be 6th and 7th as well.

Its a little complicated, but essentially I think the runners up get nothing - extra positions go to the next highest placed Premier League side

So to sum up - we need the top 4 to win both competitions this year in order to ensure that 5-7th positions get a spot. Unless we win the UEFA Cup this year of course...
