Do you often find yourself running out of gears on the downhill sections?

My maximum gear is 44-12 and I run out of steam (can't pedal fast enough)

Fairly hilly on good road surfaces but worse coming home than going (400ft up, 800ft down on the way in and vice versa), which is probably the right way around. I'm fairly fit so the 16 miles doesn't concern me but I'm not bike fit yet, so the first few weeks may be more of a struggle.

More likely to go off road at the weekend.

I reckon my commute is probably more suited to a good road bike but I was hoping a decent hybrid would do the job.
You are spot on about getting bike fit. I only started cycle commuting again at the end of May after a long break. I was running fit but hardly any miles on the bike this year. I slowly built up the cycling mileage with alternate days at first and now up to 120 miles a week over 4 days, which I've managed over last 4 weeks.

It was a slight struggle at first as you feel weakness in thighs. Now feel like cycling muscles have returned. Good luck.

MCFC1993. I might add that if you just cycle twice a week you might not ever really get "bike fit" and it will always be hard work. Or it could be just enough to get fit. You could add a longer ride at weekend?

Just try it, build up the fitness and see what works for you.

I'm actually hoping to get out on it most days, the commuting bit is just the most important part for me, so I am expecting the fitness to come.
