Cycling Advice

Overtaken at relatively close quarters by a BMW on my way to work this morning on a fairly quiet (0630hrs) single carriageway B-Road.

Normally I'm not that arsed, especially this time as they weren't going particularly fast but the tw@t then went on to give a parked car 50yds further down the road TWICE the room he'd just given me.

Just shows the mentality of some drivers.
 
I wouldnt disagree but cyclist also need to use the cycle lanes.

Along my route to work on duel carriageways. There is a well kept 10 foot plus cycle path on both sides. For over a mile. Another 10 foot plus on the other duel carriageway and the old unused road on the other duel carriageway which is in good nick.

All in all these cycle paths are in great condition but you see every morning and evening the pretend tour de France cycles using the duel carriageways. This means the inside lane cant bee used by cars etc because you have to give cyclist 6 foot passing room. It seems to raise tempers.

I am an ex cyclist and I would have lived to use these cycle paths back in the day.

Shared use paths like this are a good option for kids or people who are nervous about cycling. For anyone more confident on a bike they are next to useless because you have to stop or slow at every side road junction. Stopping and starting is where you use most energy on bike so this kind of cycle path is hard work.

I’m not familiar with this particular road but one I use with a similar design that has several points where cyclists are required to dismount. These points occur where the road layout and terrain means there’s not enough room for the cycle path anymore, at least without spending a bit of money to sort it out. I notice there are no roads where car drivers are required to stop, get out and push their cars every so often. It’s frustrating that so much cycle infrastructure is designed like this as it makes using a bike to get about so much harder than it should be.

I know it's the Daily Fail, but any thoughts on the prospect of cyclists having to sport registration numbers, insurance, speed restrictions, etc.?
I dont really know what it would achieve...most people who bang on about cyclists having insurance are suggesting it in some sort of punitive way.....not in order to safeguard drivers from "uninsured cyclists".

Enforcing the highway code and the "dont be dick" rule should really cover the main issues

Yup.

I'm hoping it's just the Daily Fail click-bait pandering to the hoards of car loving, anti-cyling Gammons who foam at them mouth every time someone posts a close pass video on social media . I've just got this feeling that it might just start to gain traction and if it does it will be a huge backwards step in terms of encouraging active travel.
