Cycling Advice

I've not been to the velodrome for a while too, used to go twice a week as well as have a ride when I took kids from the school I teach in. Never bothered with accreditation, just did the Monday and Thursday tasters as we had a good group who weren't too fast / weren't averse to putting the hammer down now and again. First started taking schoolkids down there in 2004 / 2005, we used to get there early and watch the GB squad sit 3mm from the rear end of the motorbike and whistle round at 60mph+ The GB squad were amongst the frielndliest down to earth bunch you could wish to meet - Hoy, Mclean etc, used to come and chat to the kids, sign waterbottles etc. Remember watching a young Cav and the coach (Andrea - think she used to be a bloke!) said, "keep an eye on that kid, he's special" She (He!) wasn't wrong.
Never ever been but would fancy it at some point.

I think you'd love it based on your other posts in the running thread. I only went once as a taster session when I was in a cycling club many years ago and took to it quite comfortably, even though at the time I had never rode fixed gear before.

I also recommend fixed gear on road even if just for a bit of fun. I commuted on fixed in winter for a few years and still enjoy a blast on it these days. I built a couple of fixed gear bikes from old frames that I found - need horizontal drop outs on rear forks though so most modern frames are not suitable.

Haha, got a blown tyre about 4 weeks ago going down Cragg, was a bit of a nervous time I can tell you, whilst fixing it loads we’re going up on them passing the lads on road bikes, there was some cursing from them I can tell you.
In Italy, they actively encourage electric bikes and there are some absolute top-notch ones around (Cipollini, Canondale etc) which look like road bikes (with the crafty extra bit!). I rode there couple of years ago and they told me it means more people are out "cycling"; that older people can continue when they otherwise might have given up and that means fewer people in cars; getting unfit etc. Not sure I'd be saying the same dying in a pool of lactic as some cheeky bastard whirrs past me!

Took one of these for a spin the other week, holy shit I want one!
Only $5k

Surprised not much mention of ebikes. For the slightly older person they are a godsend.
During the recent good weather I was out 3 hours a day cycling, been impossible for me on a non electric.
People have an idea they are a kind of cheating on the fitness, not so.
They have usually 3 levels of assistance, mine goes at 30% 50% 70%.
The help you receive when riding takes away the aversion to hills, so allows for longer journeys.
I hadn't cycled for years until last year, and when I started had to use the 70% and 50% a lot.
Now I find my 2 most regular settings are 0 and 30% so it definitely helps with overall health.

That argument is a few years old now. Discs will be standard on competion race bikes across the next 5 or 10 years. The general public has decided they want them so the industry will follow.
The pro peloton always filters down to the consumer market eventually. I remember the first time I saw somebody out for a Sunday ride with a couple of his mates, wearing a a full on aero TT helmet.

The public haven’t decided they want them the industry have decided we are having them, on a MTB I totally get them on a road bike I can’t get on with them and prefer calliper brakes mainly due to being able to finesse I have tried both down one of the trickiest descents in Majorca and still prefer calliper but I know when I make make my next road bike purchase I won’t have much option. Disks do stop you and when coupled with hydraulic they are more responsive but at time I found it a bit all or nothing oh and the fucking screeching!
