Cycling Advice

I did 56 miles yesterday up and around Siddingto so pretty flat but bastard headwind most of the ride. Any ¨marginal gains¨ were quickly undone with the cans of San Miguel / bottle of red and mountain of paella I had as ¨recovery¨ food. Leaving it late today, heading out to Brickworks at half six when traffic should be quieter. On the question of resting heart rate, 55bpm is cracking for anyone over 40. Im 52 and have a resting rate that fluctuates between 53 and 61. Big MIg, so the legend goes, had one of twentyfucking8. Lungs like a fucking whale. And possibly, ahem, one or two other things that ¨helped¨.

Got a pal who’s a fitness fanatic & he’s had to have a pacemaker fitted at 40 ish. I think it’s because his heart rate gets that slow. If it’s only beating every 2 seconds in the middle of the night, that’s a worry.
Part of the reason why I’ve strived throughout my life not to get too fit ;-)

lol, as a student when I had no cash, I lived off 2 meals basically; either porridge and a multivitamin tablet, or peanut butter & raspberry jam on toast! Could get a bit messy on the bike though, but I’ll give it a go.

Yeah, I wear cycling jerseys stuffed to the gills, but I need to sort out the water situation - I have one holder on the vertical seat bar, but diagonal bar holder is used for a small pump, rather than a drinks holder. Any advice? I’m guessing I could buy something to strap the pump on to the underside of the horizontal top bar of the frame??
I put a small pump in my back pocket, usuall wear a cycling t-shirt with pockets plus a lightweight jacket with more pockets, i have 2 water bottles on the bike, spare inners one my seat bag plus tools, mate takes a gas cyclinder in his instead of a pump but I don’t like them.

I've done a couple if dry runs and it works out about 5 - 10 minutes slower on the bike. For me it's more getting up early enough to have my breakfast so that I'm not throwing up half way to work.
Eat enough night before and you won’t need breakfast, I’m back on the 16:8 diet so don’t eat until 10am which means morning bike ride is done on bottle of water only, done 2x 3 hour rides in the last week and been fine, starving when finished mind!!

The fitter you get the less food/drink you¨ll need. You¨ll build up your lactic threshold - obviously if you start to extend the distance then you¨ll need to take enough food. Having, as the French say, ¨un jour sans" is not recommended. I once did a local 100 mile sportive in driving rain, sleet, that included 19 climbs. We had to huddle in the pub on top of the Cat and Fiddle. With thirty miles to go I hit the wall, the hammer well and truly came down, ended up finishing in just over nine HOURS. Totally and utterly fucked but determined to finish. Peddling squares for best part of 3 hours.
Gerant Thomas once told a story of being out with Wiggins and a few of the more experienced GB squad. They were doing a seven hour ride and left Thomas on his own after about 4 hours. He too hit the wall and, in a rare sign of desperation from the future tour winner, with no shops to be seen for mile after mile - he wandered into a farmer¨s field and ate a raw turnip!!

Cyclists with slow heart rates getting up in the middle of the night was de rigueur in the ¨90s and ¨00s. Swinging from bannisters to ensure their thickened blood didn¨t stop their hearts. Some forgot, with devastating effect...

You really need to keep on top of your chain. If you don't clean it regularly it gets full of dirt which mixes with the lubricant and turns into grinding paste. This will not only significantly reduce the life of your chain but also wear out your gear cogs much faster.
Very true. I use Fenwicks concentrated bike cleaner. Just a word of warning - it showed up when I was scanned at Manchester airport - I¨d cleaned my bike the day before going on holiday and residue was on my backpack. Picked up by the machines at the airport I was grilled about my job, where I had been the last few days. They then asked if I had cleaned my bike - that was the guilty product.

The huddling in the pub bit has just made laugh, a group of us did C2C in a day a while back, we had the full four seasons in a day weather and were huddled behind a road sigh to get out of driving hailstones in the middle of nowhere between Allendale and Corby, it was hideous.

last year in Majorca we went out on a big day ride in full brilliant sunshine with and I have to be honest not even a gilet between us, we were at one point in foil recovery blankets huddled around a wood burning stove in a cafe at the top of one of the Cols wondering just how the fuck we going to get back to the resort as it was still pissing it down the temp had dropped from 28 to 11 and we had a high speed descent on roads like glass, lucky for us three kind Canadian lads who were just driving about took pity and lent us some jackets as they were staying in the same resort, now I am a decent descender but I was scared shitless on the way back.

Another lesson learnt the hard way on the bike.
