Dalian Atkinson - Policeman guilty of manslaughter

If you repeatedly kick someone on the ground in the head, yeah you can assume that stands a pretty good chance to kill them. Just like if you stab someone or shoot them.
Stabbing and shooting is more clear cut at you are using deadly weapons.

Punching and kicking is less so.

Kicking someone in the head while they are on the ground is a pretty deliberate way of causing someone massive damage, it's not like punching someone who just happens to fall and hit their head. You kick a barely conscious person in the head, they are in big trouble, you do it repeatedly, you should be fully aware of what the likely outcome will be.

We’d obviously need to see the nuances of the case as they decided on manslaughter having seen the evidence.

If the jury have gone simply on the accounts of the two officers, then he may be lucky to get away with the murder charge. If other mitigating circumstances were spelled out, then he wasn’t lucky.

If the victim wasn’t semi famous it probably wouldn’t have even gone to trial

Thats the worrying point - there have been many deaths in custody and all the police do is close ranks and so nobody was successfully prosecuted for any crime committed - it took a higher profile victim to get this over the line and hopefully make some overly aggressive cops think about their behaviour
