On Keys and Gray now. He has just talked about leaving Sunderland for City, how he liked Swales, we always considered ourselves to be bigger than the likes of Sunderland and how Colin Bell was the best player he played with or against and likened him to a sheepdog for his running ability. Now telling some good stories about him and Tueart.

One of my all time favorite players.

Header into the North Stand net against Ipswich. Brilliant.

Legend, for club and country. A real warrior, who still holds a great deal of affection for City. Two of the best pieces of business we ever did with Sunderland, signing Big Dave and Dennis Tueart (Horswill was a make weight in the deal, never saw Tony Towers, but Blues who did were sorry to see him go up there in exchange). Towers was a good player and IMO much better that Horswill who didn't really do much for City. He'd been a bit of a hatchet man in midfield for Sunderland and it worked in the 2nd Division, but not when he moved up to our standard.

I think it was case of Sunderland insisting that if they didn't get Towers then the Tueart deal was off. City desperately wanted him, and quite rightly so. He was a big hit with the fans from day one.

His interview voice and manner are deceiving, he comes across as a pleasant "chap", intelligent and erudite.

On the pitch he was a rock-hard bastard, not in the Hunter/Webb mould, who relied on thuggery to justify their selection, but as a brilliant reader of the game who never ducked a tackle, or pulled out of a header. Best of all the centre-halfs to have played for City in my life time

Really liked Towers. Remember the classic 5-2 against Wolves. Never seen a shot dip as much. The bloke next to me screamed "what the fu*ks tha... what a goal!!!

There is a clip on YouTube of Derby beating us 1-0 in Div2 in 1984. Big Dave scores the winner against us! I didn't remember that one.

I'll always remember his last minute winner against Academica Coimbra in the Cup Winners Cup. The roof nearly came off the Kippax when that one went in.
I think he was only 16 or 17 at the time.

Great header against Ipswich at North Stand. Think Mick Mills was on the line and it went past him before he could barely jump. Looked before on You Tube but can't find it.....

went to newquay cornwall in about 1978 Tony Towers was staying in the caravan next to us ,top bloke

That's the goal I always think of when Towers is mentioned, I was right behind the net in the Platt Lane when it went in, last minute of extra time and everyone going mental - City heading for a European semi-final!

I remember that. Weren't Ipswich top of the league at that point?

From outside the box. MY FIRST GAME!

Liverpool, I think. It was the season we finished second by a point. Never seen a header as hard since. Talking of ''Big Dave'', does anyone else remember the OG against Liverpool at Maine Road, just after Christmas? Bloody freezing night, we were leading 1-0 (Joe Royle scored just before HT), and we were in the last 5 minutes (IIRC) when Corrigan came out for a cross. Problem was, Watson never saw him and decided to head the ball back to where he though Joe was, into an empty net. That goal conceivably cost us the league that season, as Liverpool would have ended up one point worse off and we'd have had one point more (2 points for a win back in those day).

Hardest header I have seen OR HEARD from my row 10 North Stand seat! Made the goal rattle!
