Referee's are human and football is now a huge money business worldwide. I'm actually surprised more haven't been got at, either by being bribed or threatened. Perhaps they have but we haven't heard about it. Var was supposed to make the chances of that pretty difficult, if not impossible. It's funny they've tweaked it to lean towards going with the on field referee's decision more, which again opens the door to corruption.

Bribery and buying of refs used to be something that was considered only to happen "over there" in games involving Italian teams etc. Players involved in match fixing has been here for 30 years or more, however.
