For the last 40+ years I've run football teams and football leagues here in the North West. I had a team in the eighties, and this lad joined. He convinced my brother that the two of them were good enough to try out for Bury, where his dad had some tenuous connection. It would be generous to say they were bang average players, and didn't attend trials in the end.

About eight years later, this same lad applied to enter a team into the league in Manchester I was now secretary of. In his application, he gave all his impressive credentials, told us about his team, his financing, his football experience, where they would play etc., so we duly invited him to an interview.

After we'd gone through the vetting, I said, "So Peter, it says in your application you used to play for Altrincham. Tell us how you went from being one of my substitutes in the Manchester Students Pub League to playing for Altrincham FC." We both knew it was a load of made up rubbish, and he embarrassingly concocted some tale of justification.

I checked him out on LinkedIn earlier this week. He is an experienced Company Director, specialising in helping start up businesses to apply for finance. He comes highly recommended, and has over 400 connections. His firm went into liquidation in 2019. It struck me that he has probably blagged his way through life, and will soon be blagging his way through retirement. It's in his blood. Some people are just like that.

The good thing is, people like that keep getting found out, as you did. Eventually nobody will touch them with a proverbial barge pole. Or they end up inside.

Can I just drop the grenade of bullshitting/blagging parents (usually but not always mums) who take about 50 random days off a year on the pretence their kids are “ill/upset/having a hard time with their exams” etc and expect everyone else to pick up their slack

I’ve worked at our place for over 20 years I’m a union rep , we get well paid and well looked after and I like to think I’m a fair bloke
And I’ll be honest there’s some entitlement from a few lads and it is embarrassing. The company are pretty good with me if anyone steps out line there’ll ask me for a “ off the record chat” . But there’s some who you just can’t help or think they know better .
We went through redundancies last year and the whole thing changed absenteeism went down to zero percent.

Yeah, usually in the HR department. There are certain people where you'll email them asking for something and then a week goes by without a response, so you email them again this time CCing in their boss, and suddenly they respond within 10 minutes.

I was a goods inwards manager for a large electrical manufacturing firm in the early 90s and the bane of my life was a woman buyer, ordering components etc. Very attractive but thick as mince. Always ordering massive amounts but hardly ever entering onto what was a new but basic, though fairly easy to use computer system or providing a hard copy invoice so I'd know what was coming in so I could organise storage. Lorries would turn up out of the blue and there be nowhere to put it. I had to make an official complaint in the end as I was fed up of taking the blame. All she'd do was bend over to 'look' for purchase orders in her filing cabinet and give Eddie the boss (an avid old letch) a look at her arse in the tight dresses she always wore and it would somehow be my fault again and again even when the other buyers backed me up. Her name was Whitbread but she was known throughout her office as Wood head. I left for another job soon after.

They’re everywhere. Have a bloke at my place who’s a senior engineer, any opportunity to do fuck all he is up for but when it comes to doing his job, never delivers on time, always over budget etc. Always the first to start with the mental health messaging and wanting to stand up for workers rights but doesn’t give a fuck about any of the teams mental health if it means him doing anything. The guy is basically wanting to be made redundant and then retire but in reality just needs sacking for incompetence. HR useless on the matter when it’s been shown by his line manager using performance management that he’s not up to the job.
Then we have the other extreme of grads who don’t think they should get their hands dirty and go on site. Had one say that he didn’t go to Imperial to spend his time out in the cold. He was told he had to get site experience for his development and the grad raised a complaint to HR who proceeded to tell us that going on site isn’t for everyone and that we needed to be more inclusive. Useless wankers.
