How about we halve the funding for boys' football and spend the other half on girls' football? Why shouldn’t there be a choice though? There’s a finite amount of money available, and my post was highlighting the fact that the WSL is already receiving millions of pounds worth of subsidies, money which could alternatively be spent on playing fields. If the FA chooses to subsidise a professional women’s league - which current levels of demand would not sustain - then choices have to be made in terms of funding.
With their statement, the England players are essentially asking for their preference to be prioritised over all other areas of public expenditure, including providing assistance for heating bills this winter and helping to maintain a decent living wage for key public sector workers, given the rise of inflation. I think the statement shows a lack of self-awareness given the pressures facing the country.
