DENMARK is planning to ban bestiality despite nearly a quarter of the population agreeing with animal sex.

The bill has been long-awaited with the country being one of the few in Europe to allow bestiality.

Food and agriculture minister, Dan Jørgensen, said to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet: “I have decided that we should ban sex with animals.”

He said an overriding factor in his decision was the damage done to Denmark's reputation by allowing sex with animals, but added: “The most important is that in the vast majority of cases it is an attack against the animals.

And under all circumstances, any doubts about it should go to the animals’ benefit. They naturally cannot say no to going along with it."

A recent Gallup poll indicated that 76% of the Danish population support banning sex with animals.

The bill, which requires change in the country's welfare animal laws, will be introduced by the Danish government in 2015.

Finland, Hungary and Romania currently have no laws against sex with animals.
