Any good?

Saw him in the U19 tournament where he looked incredible, maybe the best player on the pitch for Spain.

I really doubt Barca would let him go, he's that good.

We should do it if we can. Between him and Isco, we could solve our width problems for a mere 25m, a bargain if you look at how much Hazard went for.

The boy is known for his arrogant swagger, he recently came off the bench for Barca in a Champions League game against Spartak and was waving his hands about critiquing some of the best players in the world. Basically he could end up a diva like Ronaldo but it's the sort of thing you accept with such a talent.

Anyway from what I've been reading he wants to be playing top level football NOW. Not in the future but right now, he thinks he is good enough and ready. If City or Chelsea have any chance of getting him this is how, you have to offer him a weekly spot in the first team picture, on the bench or on the pitch, then maybe he could be tempted away.

Problem for him is that Barcelona have the likes of Messi, Sanchez, Pedro, Villa, Fabregas, and Tello who can/do play in advanced roles and Neymar could be on the way. But maybe he has been encouraged by being selected before Tello in that Champions League game to come off the bench. I honestly think we have less standing in the way of him playing first team football, I mean he could have Sinclair's regular spot on the bench at least since Mancini doesn't want to play Sinclair and Deulofeu can play winger or forward (is one of the top scorers in LIGA Adelante this season with 8 goals).

PS: As long as the primary source of this story is the Daily Star I wouldn't get my hopes up too much.

Honestly Sinclair and some of these strikers must go. They aren't helping us anywhere near what their salaries suggest. Between Mario, Nasri, Dzeko and Sinclair we have over 400k in salary per week for part time players. This has to be trimmed for lower salaried players we can develop.

Be amazed if Barca sell or that we are able to sign him.

Would love to see him at City.

-- Mon Dec 03, 2012 9:40 am --

Be amazed if Barca sell or that we are able to sign him.

fancy dan, far too technical for City fans; tracking back is everything, just above putting in a shift and body language

we need serious competition (or replacement) for nasri - will signing this kid hinder Suarez' chances?

The problem for him is Tito found the way how to play Busquets, Cesc, Iniesta and Xavi in same midfield plus there's Messi everywhere so they have only one spot left and 5 other players + Deulofeu to fight for that position. Also Thiago recovered from his injury so Iniesta will play "wide" more often than under Pep. Won't surprise me if Gerard will want to leave. He'll be a phenomenal player so we must try our everything to sign him. Isco is fantastic but Deulofeu will be even better.

-- Mon Dec 03, 2012 2:11 pm --

I think Suarez will be a CM but Deulofeu is a winger/fake no. 9. Maybe Lopes won't be happy. Pozo is a second striker, I think.

have never seen the boy tbh but i'm sure people who are expecting that every Barcelona youngster is going to be a world beater are going to be disappointed pretty soon.

Where's Thiago Alcantara? When he was introduced almost 2 years ago you would thought he's gonna be the new mix of Messi/Iniesta/maradona/zidane.. nowhere to be seen now.

Players Barcelona have now in their team are not ones who are produced in yoghurt numbers. It's one in decades generation and same stuff happened to quit a few clubs before and was never ever reproduced, just like Barcelona won't with all La Masia hype. La Masia is there for 100 years and yet they had 10 Dutch players in the team 10 years ago ;)

Nowhere to be seen? He's had a few injuries this year, mate. Keep up. And I don't think anybody expects every Barcelona youngster to be a world beater, just a few to be at least close to world class at some point in their careers. That opinion isn't borne from the reputation of Barcelona's academy but on watching the players. Eurosport is very good for youth football.

Thiago plays for Barcelona, actually made 45 appearances last season, regardless of how many were substitute appearances. He isn't nowhere, plus, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta an Fabregas are all ahead of him, not bad going.

OK, this year but he was barely used last year too.

Well, it's pretty much expected to be great as soon as he is Barcelona youngster. Some less, some more but people usually have such views.

There's surely some good players there, Spain U21 national team had great results recently but I have a feeling people are overreacting.

Barcelona are not getting rid of Deulofeu, he is their next star!

Guillem Balague - who knows his Barca stuff by the way - said Barca's upfront will be Neymar - Messi - Deleufeu! That is what Tito wants apparently.

If we signed him, expect him to be bought back in a few years.

Is Gerard Deulofeu ready for Camp Nou glory?

With so many first-team Barca players coming out of the La Masia academy on a regular basis, it is only natural fans around the world may sometimes get a partial impression about the many difficulties involved in this laborious process.

While Cules can be extremely proud about having world-class stars in graduates such as Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta or Xavi Hernandez, it must be highlighted they have reached the top of world football after years of personal sacrifice, endless training sessions and taking their coaches' advice on board with extraordinary ability and dedication.

Andres Iniesta explained: "After thinking about it for weeks, I asked my dad to accept Barcelona's offer to join La Masia at only 12 years of age. I remember how my mum and dad would travel from Albacete every weekend to watch me play, but we all cried desperately every Sunday night whenever they traveled back home. Sometimes they even had to lie to me, telling me that they would pick me up from school the next day. I remember Victor Valdes used to take care of me, he was like my brother. Some other kids were brilliant players, but didn't last two weeks in that environment, for whatever reason. Every story is different, you need to be mentally strong at all times.:

Success at the professional level doesn't come cheap. Let's face it: While children who join La Masia are supervised and given guidance at all times, they are still gifted young people who are living away from home. Such freedom can be a truly bad influence at times: The last thing a fit, confident, popular teenager wants to do on a Saturday night is going to bed early because they have a match the next day. When you are the best player in your age group, accepting criticism from your manager can be seen as a waste of time or interpreted as a direct attack.

Gerard Deulofeu undoubtedly possesses all the necessary skills to succeed in world football: raw pace, quick feet, lethal dribbling. Having made his first-team debut under Pep Guardiola in March 2011, many Cules are wondering why the talented Catalan winger, who leads the Segunda Division pichichi with eight goals, has failed to break into the professional team.

Having watched him play several games at the Ciutat Esportiva and Mini Estadi since he joined La Masia at the age of 9, I have no hesitation in saying that the Catalan youngster is a special player who is capable of bringing an extra spark of magic, who can unbalance games with his innate, electrical talent.

At the same time, I must admit that former Blaugrana academy members Jeffren Suarez, Jorge Troiteiro, Gai Assulin and Giovani Dos Santos had the ability to do just that but for whatever reason failed to establish themselves in the first team.

Having signed a contract worth 150,000 Euros a season with Nike when he was only 14, young Deulofeu has been tipped to be the next big player to wow the Camp Nou for quite a long time. Whether we like it or not, carrying such huge expectations on your shoulders has the potential of affecting your development unless you have an incredibly tough mentality.

If you have watched Barcelona B regularly this season, you may have noticed that Gerard is capable of leading the attack with constant dribbling slaloms but can also disappear from matches during long periods if things don't always go his way. Sure, he can then come back and surprise us all with a top-corner finish, but this lack of consistency could be extremely detrimental to his team as a whole -- which I believe is why the first-team coach isn't calling him regularly yet.

Said Tito Vilanova: "Gerard Deulofeu is a player with a lot to offer, but he still needs to improve a lot before he can form part of the first team. We have to see how he adapts to games. He is still very, very young."

Final Word

Deulofeu could definitely become a key player for Barcelona in the future but, at this moment, must focus on patiently completing his personal development in Segunda Division.

If the Blaugrana coaches all agree on keeping him there, it must be because they can still see some areas for improvement which must be addressed before becoming a Camp Nou regular.

As a life-long Cule, seeing upcoming La Masia youngsters developing into reliable professionals fills me with joy. I sincerely hope to be celebrating Deulofeu's goals in the not-so-distant future.

Having said that, it will be his amount of patience, ability to take constructive criticism on board and, ultimately, dedication towards reaching the next footballing level what will determine whether we are looking at a potential Blaugrana star or simply at another promising youngster who regrettably fell at the last hurdle.

¿Last year? He played 45 matches and he made 3 appearances for Spain's senior squad. Not bad.
