Diego Maradona

The guy had his problems but there's no doubt he was a very gifted footballer the best of his generation, left this world to quickly. RIP

If you are a genius you dont need to cheat or take drugs to play ?

They all cheat at some point tbf, handballs, snide fouls, dives every player will have done it.

And don't think he took drugs that improved his performance. ;-)

Greatest player of my generation with his on field talent alone, then his off field antics make him legendary

In World Cups, as an individual it’s Maradona
As a team it’s Brazil 70
In my view of course and doubtless opinions will vary
That Brazil team were fabulous.
And don’t forget Pele did it over 4 world cups, from ‘58 to ‘70.
And he was was genuinely kicked to bits at the time too.
Three World Cup winner medals.

Imsure it’s a generational thing, but regardless of Diego’s obvious talent, for all around play and intelligence on field, I always considered Pele the number one.

Messi for me is the greatest I’ve seen consistently, but doesn’t have the World Cup achievements of either of them.

So it’s very much a subjective thing, saying who was the greatest.

Took me years to forgive him for that cheated "goal." My 4 year old lad was in tears at the end of that game and so was I.
Yet a supremely talented player no doubt, and 60 is no age really. RIP.

There shouldn't be anything to forgive at this stage, and by that I mean the length of time that has passed.
If anyone did hold a grudge still, however, it should be let go of today.
Still actually taking it in. Diego Maradona is dead.

Yes, all good points and as you say it’s subjective. One thing in Maradona’s favour is the quality of the players he had in his side. He didn’t have too much of a supporting cast when compared with Pele’s Brazil sides

RIP Maradona, the best player of all time.

In the 1982 World Cup 2nd round group game between Italy and Argentina Maradona was fouled 11 times in the first half by Claudio Gentile alone. In total the Italian would foul the young Argentine 23 times in the game and Gentile only received a yellow card. That's what Maradona was up against. And then in 1986, he more or less single-handedly drove and inspired Argentina to win the World Cup

Just turned on the game and heard this sad news, the guy was a legend, possibly the greatest ever and defined a generation of skilful South American players. He really was world class. Rest in peace fella.

Best destroyed himself with alcohol, Diego with drugs. They both played the beautiful game, and RIP to both of them.
This is perhaps neither the place nor time, but my greatest admiration goes to Pelé, both as a player, and as a man.
