I like the structure of that deal. We will of course speculate as to whether it’s a CFG deal or whether we’ll see him for City and in truth even City don’t know yet, it’s all down to the player and his development. If he ends up not being good enough for City, at least 15m euros of that fee never gets paid and we make an easy profit. If he’s good enough, we’re more than happy to pay the extra amount. So there’s no risk really. It’s a good-looking deal before even knowing anything about the player.

I’m a big fan of this policy. Unless your scouts are completely useless, you’ll very rarely lose money on these speculative buys, more often than not they’ll never get near city but will make us a profit that all adds up, but if just one in several dozen comes off and they become even a semi-regular squad player it vindicates the entire approach.
