Discussion: Manuel Pellegrini 2015/16

I'm happy to discuss any sensible critique of the manager. Sadly it's not to be found in this thread and it certainly won't happen with people who demanded the board sack themselves and half the squad to retain Mancini and now believe Pellegrini is a fraud, a downgrade, the 10th best manager in the league etc.
Why on earth would anyone want to discuss the subject in a sensible way with you when you didn't have the decency to afford others that right with the last manager?

Sorry mate but your wrong, there are plenty of valid points made by fans on here about him.

The main thing which bothers me in your post is the characterisation that we can't defend or that Manuel's "way" is somehow flawed. It's become a tiresome refrain which you pretty much contradict yourself by pointing out all the different metrics which suggest that our defending isn't a huge issue in the premier league (Joe's gold glove awards, our goals conceded record in comparison to our competitors - that kind of stuff).

Mancini played %'s. Yes his team was defensively more solid because he wasn't committed to attacking in the way that Pellegrini is. As a supporter base we went from someone who had a negative mind set and set up to defend, to someone who set up to attack. There was always going to be those who prefer one way or the other, and it was also inevitable that those who prefer one way were always going to criticise the alternative approach as not being good enough. This happened during Mancini's tenure when I thought he was a clown, and it's happened during Pellegrini's tenure with half the Bobby lovers proclaiming Manuel to be a fraud.

Will be interesting to see how we react to Pep if his first season isn't one long victory parade in all competitions. He has many of the same perceived weaknesses that Manuel has and literally none of the caution Mancini had.

Fair enough Billy,

I can see how you would think I've contradicted myself with the golden gloves etc. And I've not even begun to explain all the reasons why I don't like Pellegrini's way of defending, so that doesn't help when I basically trashed it. (to be honest mate, I've been going through this for well over a year.) So yeah, I don't blame you for calling me out on that front. Unfortunately, I refuse to flog this dead horse in detail haha. But a preference to attacking football versus a preference to defensive football is an extreme simplification of each manager's tactical approach.

I totally agree with your highlighted line about Pep and I've been saying this to people when I speak of the ill, embarrassing way we, as a fanbase, are handling Guardiola's imminent arrival. It's going to be hilarious, the reactions of some of us when he hits his first obstacles. Evidence from Van Gaal and somewhat Potechinno suggests that Jeugo de Posicion can be a difficult philosophy to apply in England, (and I have no doubt that Pep will maintain his commitment to its principles.) Also, I've you said yourself, to put it very simply Pep has similar perceived weaknesses. This is because of his attacking nature... again simplification but there are elements of truth to it, at a glance. For example: Pep's Barcelona had been accused of lacking tempo at times, which makes perfect sense as I'm sure his team had to break down '10 men behind the ball' which is only natural. Pellers also takes stick for this. (Just one example.)

I, for one, will be happy to have our first world class manager. And I'll be taking notes, resisting my urges to knee jerk and enjoying the ride.

I said that our points total was the lowest for 5 seasons and MP's defenders came back with all sorts of figures to say that was disingenuous as we were only 3 points behind the leaders blah, blah, blah.

Well here's the table with our results against each team:

We haven't beaten any team above tomorrow's opponents and have just 2 points from the games against the other 6 teams in the top seven. I'l say it again, I don't care what other teams have done - for us, it's not good enough.

You're going on the naughty list.

Roll on the summer when this board can hopefully for the first time in years pretty much get behind the manager as one.

Pretty much and I fully acknowledge its an extreme over simplification but then there's so many binary posters on here who see managers purely as "genius" or "fraud" and who mistake their own personal preference on how a team should set up with actual incompetence.

I guess it's just reached a point where with Pellegrini on his way and us knowing we are getting the best manager in the world I expected people to be a bit more considered and a bit more positive. More fool me. Yesterday's muppet fest about how Pellegrini doesn't coach the players was really the bottom of the barrel being reached.
