DIY Help - Thanks!

What a boring thread, only eyedee and Stevies pants have posted anything meaningful. There's a picture of a soldier but that sailed way over my head.

Me, I'd hit it with a hammer to get all that paint off

Firstly, thanks to everyone for the advice. Much appreciated. :-)

Secondly, like most people I’m not great at DIY person bar painting, steady hand, but I’ll have a go at most things.

It’s only taken 2.5 hours, (Lol!) but I think I’ve done it. Done a few flushes and all seems ok. Suffered a bit of water damage to the ceiling below, water running down the pipe, through a small hole in the toilet floor. Didn’t turn the water tap off fully or put a towel down under the bowl on the toilet floor. Arrrgh! My fault.

The red circular clip on top of the arm was catching on the blue middle section of the cistern every time I flushed the toilet, so I’ve had to position the arm and ball float like that. The cistern fills to just under the water line, which I’m happy with.

What’s the cost of having an isolation valve fitted to the water pipe?

Correct, thus making space to ease the nut back giving access to the olive, gentle tapping olive with toffee hammer whilst supporting with metal block. Remove old olive's and nuts, clean up pipe with emery paper, replace with new isolation valve, which will take more than ten minutes(TMT is just being a ratefixer putting a price on the job).
To understand the Captain's picture, you need to watch BBC Ghost's.

DIY plumbing of that nature is made VERY easy with the advent of Speedfit connectors.

Mains off, flush bog, remove old isolation valve with spanners (have towel handy to catch any water left in the pipe above the valve), remove olives carefully, clean up with a bit of wire wool, push new valve in place.
