Do any Bluemooners live without a car

I am thinking about giving up my car now i cant get out much, i have just insured it , can i get a refund if i get rid of the car now ? I still can get out to my drs and dentist and to the vets, pretty much it . When i broke my shoulder i couldnt drive for nearly a year as it wouldnt heal so the insurance would be invalid and that was a real pain in the arse . Cant use public transport for mobility, pain and exhaustion reasons, so taxi would be the only other option

Have to make a decision
You have very peculiar biology. Break your shoulder and get a pain in the arse? I’d see a doctor if I were you.

Someone did a survey a few years ago and getting public transport, taxis and hire cars when needed saved an absolute fortune when compared with ownership.
Surely that comparison will be different for pretty much everybody based on where you live, where, when and how often you go somewhere and the definition of 'needed' ?

Small mobility scooter which you can take on the bus/train or even in a taxi.

I couldn't do without one but I despise driving.

In the summer I fuck off to the woods where I have to drive maybe once every two weeks to buy food and beer.
That drive is 15 mins depending on how many times I have to stop because of deer or turtles on the road.

Every three weeks or so I have to drive back to the City to mow the lawns and do laundry. I hate it.
Doesn't help that half the cunts on the road couldn't drive a hard prick into a bucket of lard.

Iirc it was based on a city dweller and in general. It was quite interesting when broken down.
I should inagine it is indeed very expensive if you live in a City Centre, my partner's son lives in an apartment in Salford near the Lowry. He doesn't have (or want) a car and it would cost him a fortune each month just to have a parking space never mind drive anywhere. I believe insurance would be very expensive too so it makes sense for him. Plus with the traffic so bad it's probably quicker to walk on shorter journeys anyway!

Mine was in for a service yesterday so I relied on public transport to get me back home and back to the garage
The bus was pretty prompt and it was a flat £3 fare, although I really should apply for my FOC Bus pass
But when on the bus I was thinking, could I live without a car, or how more inconvenient would my life be!

Do any Bluemooners not have access to a car, or decided not to run one anymore?
Where do you live, town centre, in a large urbanisation or rural and how much extra work is it not having one?

Never driven as to my autistic brain the roads look like they're full of lunatics.

We live out in the Beautiful Shropshire countryside & its around 2 miles to the nearest shop & 10 miles to a large town so no I could not manage without a car, & weird to say these days, I know but I still actually enjoy driving my car & riding my Motorbike :-)
My partner is a bit south of you in Herefordshire. Her village gets six buses a day, compared to more than six an hour where I am in Prestwich. No buses on Sunday out in the wilds either.

I live in the centre of a capital city and most of what I need is very walkable. The public transport here is fantastic too, so I would never consider owning a car.

When I lived in a small village in North Yorkshire though, it was absolutely essential.

Same here, live in the countryside so car is pretty much essential and like you I still enjoy driving. Most times I use public transport anywhere outside a major city it's garbage. Im sure if you're retired, dont have to go anywhere at rush hour and have all the time in the world plus a FOC discount its sound.

If I lived in London however its utterly pointless having a car. They have a mental breakdown if a train is delayed by more than 3 mins, where as in more rural areas its a pleasant surprise if the train isn't cancelled due to lack of staff.

I’m 54 and I’ve never driven, apart from a few unofficial “lessons” off the other half not long after we met about 16 years ago on the Showcase Cinema car park at Belle Vue and down around Phillips Park near the stadium. Nearly ended up smashing her car up, and that was the end of that!

I was keen on getting driving lessons when I was 18 and had just landed my first office job but I never got round to it and over the years I lost interest in the idea, apart from the above-mentioned lessons which I half enjoyed in a way, but seeing some of the loons out driving these days makes me kind of glad that I don’t drive. Living close to the city obviously helps me cope without driving as the public transport options are decent but I do accept it would be handy to have the ability to drive as a fall back option from time to time and certainly if I lived out in the sticks the need to drive would be a lot greater. The other half still runs a car - largely paid for by me lol - and the amount of times she remonstrates about shit drivers when I’m in there with her is off the scale.

Not had a car since lockdown. Haven't really missed it. Have to convince myself I'm doing some Rocky-esque montage training scene when I'm walking home with the big shop though.

Where are you?

Burnham has frozen the fare in GM at £2.

You can hop on another bus within the hour using the same ticket too, good deal that.

I think in life we are just subconsciously taught that we need cars amongst other things.

Lots of central Londoners don’t have them.

I
True that, drives me mad no pun intended :-) when I see people asking for driving instructor recommendations for their 17 year old.

These kids are basically going from being driven around by parents straight into their own car, all paid for of course.

No experience of using trains or buses, just stuck in a car everywhere they go.

I have some cousins in England that have never driven, my mother has never driven….I just cannot imagine life without my own vehicle. I do appreciate those living in an inner City (Europe) wouldn’t necessarily need one or want to store it…. Also trying to keep it secure in England would be a nightmare, I bet I’ve driven or ridden close to a million miles in my life
