Do we under appreciate our players?

I think we just hold them up to such a high standard (in the main) that criticism comes easy when we feel they've underperformed.
Some go way overboard of course and some love the sound of their own voice - or more aptly on here, the look of their posts.
Like every other subject on this board there's a happy medium to be had somewhere.

I was talking to a few mates the other day one was a fellow City fan and the other two were Liverpool and Arsenal fans. I was shocked to see that some of our players were rated a lot higher by the Arsenal and Liverpool fan than my mate who's a City fan.

Now I understand that us Blues will watch City a lot more than fans of other clubs and that they will be influenced by MOTD and pundits. After all there were people thinking that Sunderland had pulled of the coup of the century after signing Johnson. However, I can't help but feel that there are a lot of players who we currently have or have been sold who we haven't fully appreciated.

Here is a list of players who I feel we don't fully appreciate:

Hart - Joe is a fantastic keeper and without doubt one of the top 6 keepers in the world. The guy is rightly City and England's number one and has won a shit load of golden gloves. Yet some people wait on every mistake he makes to slate him.

Zabaleta - Now I don't know a single City fan who doesn't love the guy, he is a full on legend. However, I think people love him more for putting his body on the line and playing like a fan more than appreciating his ability. Two seasons ago he was one of the best right backs in the world and starring in a World Cup final. He consistently played nearly every game for us for 2 years and never put in a performance below 7 out of 10. After a hefty injury some people have already said he should be replaced.

Kolarov - The guy gets some shit on here and by some numpty who sits near me in the ground. He is nowhere near as bad as some people would believe and is a very good left back. He can defend and attack. I think some people have not got over his lack of pace.

Yaya - The guy is a legend and IMO the most complete player to ever grace the PL. He has been the cornerstone to our success and is slagged rotten because he is often badly exposed by his manager. Yaya isn't finished at the top level, he has another 3 or 4 years left in him easy. The Palace game summed it up. Before he came on we was hard working but the minute he entered the pitch he gave us control. He just brushes players off him and is a technically brilliant player.

Nasri - Is another technically brilliant player who puts a huge shift in every match which often gets unnoticed. He is a key member of this team and we are hugely missing him.

Dzeko - Has any player ever divided a fan base more than Edin? Time and time again he would bang the goals in and in a system that was never based around his strengths. Just look how difficult Bony has found it. He fired us to two league titles, more so the 2nd and still divided opinion.

I just think at times, and I include myself in this, we are too quick to slate a player and sometimes don't fully appreciate their talent.

The problem is we are in a relationship with Manchester City Football Club, that's as close and intense as being married to someone.

So we see warts and all. The good, the bad, the flaws, the no makeup first thing in a morning dog breath look so to speak.

The only time other fans see us (except when they play us) is just a 15/40 minute highlights package on match of the day and the like, which just show all the best bits.

We are all married to Manchester City Football Club, and unlike real life there's no divorce. There has to be arguments and disagreements......and boy there are plenty.

Not really. Just like most other club forums, Bluemoon isn't really an accurate portrayal of the common opinions of your match going City fan. Some are vastly under appreciated on here and some are overhyped but the opinions aren't as varied or extreme away from the internet.

Money is a factor. When you spend more than anyone else on your squad, people expect the earth. It doesn't quite work that way though.

Re individual players, match-going fans see a much fuller picture than other clubs' fans and TV viewers. And judgements based on MOTD are going to be shallow indeed.

I like to think I can judge players current form objectively from their contribution to City during their whole time here.

It depends where and when I am discussing a player as to what answer you will get.
That's the point right there. In any City player discussion, the key is 'what' exactly is being discussed.

The under appreciated players, both past and present seem to have the same double barrelled Christian names according to the guy who sits two seats away.
Fucking Hell Dzeko, Fucking Hell Barry and Fucking Hell Milner have left, but Fucking Hell Kolarov is still here. Fucking Hell Delph is waiting to be baptised.

I'll gladly swap seats with you so you can hear the bile I have to listen to every game.

Everyone is a bloody Donkey, and they were royally taking the piss out of Yaya when he came on. Even the Ball boys are bloody useless.

One of the down sides of all seater stadiums is you can't walk away from the tossers I have to listen to every game.

I don't know why they bother turning up week after week as they don't seem to enjoy it.

When they are sardonically cheering every pass Yaya makes, you can't help but think if they were away fans sitting in those seats, saying what they do, they wouldn't last very long.

I think we definitely do, and when they put in poor performances that lack effort or desire that's why we come on here and vent our anger. We know how good a group of players they are, and what they're capable of.

Judgements should be made after watching consecrative matches over a period of prolonged time, not off the back of a 60 second highlights reel.

I thought that was why bluemoon was set up so people could moan about players and managers.
Absolutely! I would just prefer it if we restricted it to here, so that in the stadium we show our support. With the odd notable exception, (mostly at other clubs) you will get a scenario where a player isn't putting in a shift for whatever reason, Berahino or Hazard as possible examples. More often than not, poor performances are down to loss of form or confidence. Fifty thousand people getting exacerbated and shouting obscenities or booing are not going to improve the situation. I don't believe many players take to the field with the express wish to chuck in a poor performance.
As an impetuous youth I confess to booing Richard Edghill. There.... It's like confession. How many Hail Mary's and Lords Prayers is that?

I think the mere fact that this thread has only generated 4 pages suggests a resounding yes to that question. Too many ungrateful tw*ts in the City support for my liking.

I was genuinely p*ss ed off when I saw rojo, Carrick & Phil Jones in the rags end against the scourers - two players in particular who you can say have largely been flops yet they and the fans are as one. Can't see that happening with Yaya or Bony being able to do likewise without getting a mouthful off some gobby, smart arse City fan with an axe to grind.

I do believe its a minority but they are the loudest and like their negative opinions to be heard. When will these City fans learn that you only get respect and admiration if you show the same in return. It was a strong subliminal message to the footballing world.

it is because we live in the City bubble. We see all the minutes of all the players, so we are far more critical of our players than opposing fans. They see them twice a year and on MOTD. We see warts and all, so it's easier to be negative.

Generally I'd trust a fan of a football team with their observations rather than a casual observer.

So let's all agree to support them in the match at the ground as laud and proud as possible. Then moan in the pub where we can "debate"

maybe people judge them on the money they are on and not the job they are doing or expecting too much?

For the rest of your life, you cruel bastard ;-)

I think most of us do, I think most take it for granted what has happened in the last 7 years, myself included. A dream come true
