"Lionel Messi is the only truly world class player in world football today".

I do, and here's why.

Messi has all the attributes, he creates chances, he can out-dribble anyway, he has wonderful technical ability and he can still score headed goals against "world class" defenders like Vidic and Ferdinand when he's a midget. Not only that but he scores loads of goals and very good ones, he makes his own goals a lot of the time and scores spectacular goals far more often than any other player.

Now, the reason I say Messi is the only world class player is because I firmly believe that the term world class gets banded about far too much, hence why I think players like Ronaldo, Rooney, Torres and to a certain extent Tevez are very good players, but not world class.

Rooney has become a very good finisher, but that's all he really is, he finishes off goals that other people create, that's really good obviously, but he doesn't create his own world class goals like Messi. And those who say Messi doesn't track back and put a foot in, he came back to the halfway line the other week, tackled a midfielder, ran half the length of the pitch with the ball beating everyone in sight(some people twice), before burying it in the bottom corner.

Ronaldo to me is closer to Messi than Rooney, but a lot of his goals came from freekicks, he's more selfish than Messi and misses easy chances(same could be said for Rooney last night) on some occassions and he isn't really in great form. Torres is too injury prone but does create some stunning goals(home v sunderland to make a point) and though he misses a fair ratio of chances, he gives himself enough opportunities to score plenty of goals. Tevez score goals, works hard, but doesn't have the same technical quality as Messi and relies on sheer grit and determination to get chances and goals.

So that's why I think Messi is the only truly world class player, does anyone agree?

Hmmm i notice you only picked forwards.... are you trying to say only forwards can be world class? ;)

Fabregas.

I tend not to agree be honest.

He is certainly one of only a very few world class players and I think Rooney is another.

But do you agree with this statement?

Sorry couldn't resist ;-)

I'd say there are only 2 absolute world class players that stand out above the rest:

Messi and Ronaldo. Obviously the latter is a cnut but you have to admire his ability. Where as Messi is just truly unbelievable. If possible he's in his own category above Ronaldo.

It's a pleasure to watch him play football and he seems a genuine down to earth bloke which when you have his ability is truly rare.

put it this way messi is on another planet to any footballer in the world at the moment. rooney, ronaldo, xavi, iniesta, fabregas etc.... messi shits all over them all. dont get me wrong im not saying they aint good players because they are truly breathtaking players but messi is one of a kind and nobody is anywhere near the talent he is

Iniesta - got twice the technical ability of any midfielder in England (Fabregas is the only one who comes close). Can take the ball in absolutely any position, and extract himself from trouble with a single touch. Gives the impression he knows where everyone is on the pitch at any one time, opposition and teammates. Makes the game look effortless, first touch is perfect and looks autotmatic, runs with the ball about an inch from his foot, great balance, poise and grace. Weight and accuracy of his passing is superb. Can play anywhere in midfield.

I enjoy watching him more than Messi to be honest. Although Messi scores the flashy goals, it's easy to overlook what Iniesta does on the pitch, because he does it so easily, i think they're both on a par with each other.

No.

You don't just have one world class player. I think Rooney and Ronaldo are world class players, and i also think Tevez is showing that he can be put in this category.

For me, being a world class player is being able to turn a game on its head. All these players can do it.

I would say Messi is the best in the world, and if he continues (He's 22!!!!!!) he could be classed in the same tier as Maradona and Pele.

World class does get over used, but there are still a lot of world class player about.

Great post, somewhere along my line of thinking. Iniesta is unbelievable. Very easy to overlook him with Messi, Ibrahimovic, Xavi, Torres, Villa, etc playing alongside him at domestic and international level.
I read an article about Guardiola somewhere once. He was approaching the end of his career at Barcelona and Xavi was regarded as his successor. They watched Iniesta in a youth team game together and Guardiola said to Xavi,
'You'll retire me, this kid will retire us all.'
