If I am honest I fell out of love with england after 86, when a team that went so close unexpectically was morphed in the decades after by the press into champions elect every tournament even though we were actually seeing a reduction of talent.
Also this sort of started the cult of footballers as celebraties rather than heroes, Gazza for example great player but lets be honest after Lazio he needed help and maybe time out of the game and limelight, but his indescretions were maginalised and laughed off for the good of the national team and the poor fella spiralled.
Venables and 96 obviously you couldn't not get swept up in because it was local but Hoddle was found to be a crank then you get the golden generation, who were maybe 3-4 of the actual team/squad and most of them players I fucking hated at club level, so why would I care because they pulled on an england shirt when you knew they would play no matter what, they didn't inspire pride.
Basically the squad/team to me hasn't been one chosen on merrit since about 1990 but on reputation and standing in the press, and it doesn't look like it will change any time soon.
Also I will admit I cannot cheer a rag scoring a goal even for england, but then I cannot cheer twats like terry either when he played so I keep it simple, Fooball I support my club and nationally the England cricket team is my choice.
