When you pick it up have a sniff and see what the attraction is.

Your dogs pooh can tell you how healthy or ill the dog is with its actual colour and formation... sloppy bright pooh usually means your dog is feeling dicky.
Darkened hard pooh can mean your dog is feeling healthy.

This is what I was told by a Vet anyway.

So my logic is they smell their own poo which lets them know about issues such as their diet and health.

My dog ignores other dogs poo and always walks past, but will spend time smelling his own crap

I do.

If it runs through my fingers when i pick it up then i know to stop drinking.

lol. You need to learn to not pick it up. Dog's don't so why do you. Just sniff it like them. Probably same result that you need to stop drinking.
