Donald Trump

Thing is, last time he was nuts. He’s going to be multiple times worse next time. Given all that’s happened in the world, and to him; and his continued drug abuse. And his age. And his entire personality. All combined.

And he could conceivably still get elected?

The Western world is losing its fucking mind. The only rational explanation for this insanity can be all this technology and social media. It’s slowly turning us all insane.

What better explanation can there be?

I know some (a lot?) on this side of the pond like to look down at our transatlantic brethren, and view them as being simple folk. Which is utter nonsense. Like in any country, there's smart and stupid people in 'murica. But if they elect this joker again, and don't completely rule it out, I'm giving up on them.
Me too Jim. And I live here.
The nuts and shit-for-brains brigade is out in force for this one, I'm afraid.

If he gets elected, my exit strategy will be brought forward by a number of years...

He saw the sinister opportunities that social media presented him at an early stage and developed SM into a tool to spread disinformation and brainwash the stupid who are predisposed to putting any perceived slight or issue that plays to their prejudices down to conspiracy. He had a big helping hand from Putin throwing his bots at it and interfering with the 2016 election, but he has done a very good job of controlling the narrative after that.

He has also tapped into the nonsense that Americans live by of aligning himself, somehow, with God and obtaining the validation that provides. He doesnt know one end of the bible from the other, but so long as so many there live by that unfathomable code whereby 'God' and 'guns' are somehow linked, then he will appeal.

I think we’re in danger of giving him too much credit. He’s effectively a useful idiot who hasn’t really got a clue what he’s doing. The most dangerous part of Trump is how he enables the mendacious and more competent individuals that cling to him. The Steve Bannon types. Trump hasn’t got any kind of strategy or deeper level of thinking. He just wants to be a big important emperor type because he’s a narcissist, not because he has political principles.

But through him, you get the really evil fuckers. If he’s elected again you don’t just get a bloke who is 4 years more mentally deficient than he was last time, you get a bunch of sadistic cunts who have been planning the last four years for a complete takeover of democracy.

Agree with all of this, apart from the order of the first part. Putin came first and trump is simply his stooge.

There's Trump, there's the subset of his craven, twisted minions, and then there are the shameful, fundamental cowards in the GOP who enable him time and time and time again, who could have stopped him a number of times but instead cowered in his wake for fear of losing their own jobs. They are just as traitorous to the nation and its people, if not worse.

Liz Cheney put it best: “I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.”

I think if he gets in, we all need to be alert to an attack upon democracy.

Globally, I mean.

Think it would be a genuine, if somewhat remote possibility.

If the US can go, why not Europe? And then where is left?

Agree completely. Sounds melodramatic but these events have a habit of compounding with terrible consequences.

If the dominoes start to fall then get me on a flight to Tunisia and call me Cato. I’m not sure I want to see what comes after.
