Thing is, last time he was nuts. He’s going to be multiple times worse next time. Given all that’s happened in the world, and to him; and his continued drug abuse. And his age. And his entire personality. All combined.

And he could conceivably still get elected?

The Western world is losing its fucking mind. The only rational explanation for this insanity can be all this technology and social media. It’s slowly turning us all insane.

What better explanation can there be?

Apathy and shit electoral systems. I mean Trump is a massive **** but if he does get back in it will be because not enough people turn out for his opponent.
Pissing off a portion of your voter base thinking they have knowhere else to go doesn't stack up when they can just stay in bed.

I think if he gets in, we all need to be alert to an attack upon democracy.

Think it would be a genuine, if somewhat remote possibility.

Agree completely. Sounds melodramatic but these events have a habit of compounding with terrible consequences.

If the dominoes start to fall then get me on a flight to Tunisia and call me Cato. I’m not sure I want to see what comes after.

Our institutions have definitely been under attack. Maybe that was always going to happen tbf.

Maybe this is what western decline actually looks like.

He saw the sinister opportunities that social media presented him at an early stage and developed SM into a tool to spread disinformation and brainwash the stupid who are predisposed to putting any perceived slight or issue that plays to their prejudices down to conspiracy. He had a big helping hand from Putin throwing his bots at it and interfering with the 2016 election, but he has done a very good job of controlling the narrative after that.

He has also tapped into the nonsense that Americans live by of aligning himself, somehow, with God and obtaining the validation that provides. He doesnt know one end of the bible from the other, but so long as so many there live by that unfathomable code whereby 'God' and 'guns' are somehow linked, then he will appeal.

It’s where the EU can still act as a curbing mechanism though, at least for now. It needs a lot of Trumps to come to power and to also have full control rather than be in a coalition domestically in countries.

I can’t see it for a while yet and Trump getting in power again might not actually be a bad thing in that respect, particularly for Europe.

Orban was doing his thing waaaay before Trump. Its Trump who is following Orban.

Yep, due to what he’ll do both domestically and internationally. It’ll be a part of seeing what he turns the US into and how he governs with even more shackles off and also if he doesn’t support Ukraine, I think it’ll see the European countries step up even further in their support and it’ll have the consequence of increasing unity. There’s a geopolitical part to it as well with the US (and ourselves tbh) which coupled with our democratic systems means we’re more susceptible to people like him getting into what could be considered absolute power than could happen in Europe.

I think it’s far more likely we’ll see the dissolution of the US as a consequence of Trump than Europe changing drastically and I don’t think either will happen.

It’s going to be a depressing few years regardless though. Was thinking about it the other day as my sons just started Uni - I do feel angry on behalf of him for the world we’re passing on.
