Donald Trump

Sometimes ponder what Alistair Cooke would have said about the orange moron in his Letter from America.
Now that's a thought and a reminder of how far away we are now from Cooke's America.

(On the matter of speaking/writing style alone, Cooke liked to edit out the word "very" from the final version of his scripts; quite different from the hyperbole-prone guy for whom everything is either the greatest or most terrible.)

Taking out most adverbs will improve any article or speech, especially "bigly".

Yeah, let's see.

First, no it isn't. Otherwise Nixon would never have resigned.

But that was then.

Of course it seems "about the policies" now that the law-breaking etc. has been ignored by the electorate and squelched by his election.

Problem is, if they fuck all the policies up, all those that supported him will continue to support him, and whomever he hand picks to follow him, and blame the now powerless Democrats, immigrants, women, gay people, "deep state" and whomever else isn't them for all the ills. And his followers will come right along.

So it doesn't matter, does it?

Nope.

But that what he wants the "other side" to feel. Fear. Hopelessness. Terror. It what keeps autocrats in the big seats.

Go look at some of the posts from his supporters on these threads, reveling in the pain and suffering of others. Remember when Harris promised to build bridges and name Republicans to positions of import in her government? Has Trump done that? Will he ever? Of course not. He only wants sycophants. He's not even naming experienced experts to his cabinet (his previous cabinet nearly to a member disavowed him and/or won't work with him again).

So if/when he fails, we all who think he should be as far away from the WH as is possible (preferably Uranus) can all say we told you so, and not a single poster here who supported him will say, "You were right. We fucked up. We learned our lesson." Not one.

So again, the success or failure of his policies are 100% completely and totally irrelevant to his support.
I rewatched episode one of The Cleaner, with Helena Bonham-Carter as the woman who stabbed her husband 38 times. "Living with him was like a series of paper cuts so eventually it was time he bled." So why didn't you just leave him? "Sunk cost fallacy."

His MAGA supporters have invested too much in the relationship to let a bit of his madness end it. His irrational choices for appointments have to be rationalised.

All this because I have no interest in having a drink with you.

Sad.
Just seen these posts. Not got time to go back & view the back & forth posts between you both but I would have no interest with spending time with a Trump supporter. In fact if any of my friends or family said they supported Trump even over here in the UK I would disown them & never speak to them again. Anyone who is an adjudicated rapist, doesn't pay people who work for him, constantly lies, close friend of Epstein & numerous other things has no morals or principles & no respect for the law, rules & regulations. And anyone who supports him. It says a lot about their morals or lack of. I remember seeing a clip from one of his rallies where he is laughing & joking about one of his supporters attacking & almost killing Nancy Pelosi's husband. That clip made me sick to my stomach & anyone who can support this piece of vermin is evil themselves.

Hey. It’s the bestest democracy in the world, now that he won.
This is exactly what they voted for,
apparently.
Wouldn’t be my cup of tea, for much of the reasons specified in here, but it doesn’t seem to bother half of America.

I don’t mind stating my point of view and debating (where possible) from an outsiders view. Whether it means anything to either side of our American chums, is doubtful.

The fact is, I couldn’t live there.
The arguments from Blue and Red have me equally convinced of that.
Blue side regarding Trump, give arguments I find so bloody obvious to a neutral that I can’t understand who it needs pointing out to.
The Red side don’t acknowledge the obvious but offer back a load of whataboutery.

Well, if there’s no difference, your welcome to what you get, but unfortunately the repercussions will extend well beyond your shores.

Difficult to disagree but fear and trembling doesn't help - stop shivering in your boots man and join the Dump the Trump revolution!! ;-)

I’m more scared that morality/quality just doesn’t matter. It’s just “policies” — which he will utterly fail at implementing, but which will be excused away and ignored, just as his moral failings are. Which will then make moral failings irrelevant for all future candidates.

It drives me mad hearing Trump voters say they like his policies.

He doesn't have policies. He has the vaguest suggestion of things he might do. And anything that sounds affirmative or a conviction will have been contradicted by the end of the day.

He likes Tarifs, anything from 0 to 200.

He wants to ban abortion, maybe, maybe not.

He wants to end inflation. No mention of the fact the FED are responsible for interest rates and potus has no control over the FED. No mention of how he will have any influence on inflation.

Mass deportation, sure. No mention of how, we know in Europe its significantly harder than you think it could be.

I could go on and on. In short, it's policies for people that don't know what a policy should look like.

So he has a mandate for nothing. Its a big mandate and full control over the government to deliver it. But he doesn't really have policies.
